I think the point of it is to try and look avant garde.
The point is that it feels so good when you stop.
And that you have proven to yourself that you can write a short novel, albiet a crappy one.

The point is to get you to actually finish a first draft rather than having a first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eight, ninth (etc) draft, none of which go past third chapter.
