I've started a WIP mod discussion page in the sub-forum for mod creators. The OP of that thread has a current version of the mod as a downloadable zip attachment. Anyone interested in giving the mod a beta try-out please feel free to do so. Here is the link to the mod discussion page. Currently the added names are complete for the following civs:

Hello everyone.

I'm currently building a mod for use with BNW that will assign Great General and Great Admiral names based on the civ to which they were best historically linked. So when Rome is either an AI player or the human player, it's great generals list will include Gaius Marius and Scipio Africanus but not for example Robert E. Lee. Russia would use Ivan the Terrible and Georgy Zhukov but wouldn't want to use Sitting Bull unless all names appropriate for Russia had been used.

I have all the code that will handle this completed, but I need more Great General and Admiral names. I have worked through the existing list of great generals as supplied by Firaxis and assigned them to appropriate civilizations, and I've added some new great general names. I have not yet started work on assigning Great Admiral names to specific civs.

I could use your help in creating a more extensive list of great generals and great admirals. So, if you have time or inclination, please drop a comment with a suggested Great General or Great Admiral name and the civ to which they ought to be assigned.

Please keep suggestions to historical figures. While I have a particular affection for Horatio Hornblower, as an example, he really ought not to show up as a Great Admiral name for England. Please also make suggestions only for the Civilizations as provided by Firaxis (includes the DLC CIVS). I haven't decided yet upon a best method for custom modded-in civilizations.

So if you've felt your native or cultural homeland has been neglected in regard to being represented in the list of Great Generals or Great Admirals, here's your chance to rectify the omission.

For Rome, I'm not real familiar with post-Republican history, so any names for Imperial-era Rome are welcome.

Part of my problem in selecting names appropriate to a particular civ is I kinda suck at google, so have not had tons of success trying to search for GG or GA names to add.

If you have a suggestion for a Great General or Great Admiral that doesn't fit well with one of the existing civs but you think really ought to be present in the game, please do make the suggestion and I'll use that name for the generic lists civs will use when they run out of names or don't have any specific names assigned.
For example, where I added Garibaldi but didn't assign him to a specific civilization.

Great Generals(updated list)
("ASSIGNED" signifies they were already in-game and I have assigned them to a civ, "ADDED" signifies they are new and I have added them into the XML of my mod)

The Zulu's will be tough I think, but I like your idea. I for one will certainly use your mod. It's annoying to have a Russian Patton. Also, don't forget George Custer.

Arabia go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Arabs it lists Arab military commanders.

France is easy use Napoleon's Marshals and Vercingetorix. Plus there are tons through French history.

For Assyria use their kings. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Assyrians#List_of_Kings

Austria http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Austrian_generals

I'll get back to you about more.

For Brazil, Luis Alves de Lima e Silva, the Duke of Caxias. Not sure which form of that full name would be appropriate to use.

thx. I can do a little google on his name and decide how best to 'fit' his full name in. I've had to do that with most of the aristocratic names anyway.

Fun idea.

Some generals: T.E. Lawrence, Arabia; Joseph Brant, Iroquois.

Some admirals: Arleigh Burke, United States; Zheng He, China; Artemisia, Persia.

china if you need general names just look at the 3 kingdoms era. zhang fei, guan yu, liu bei, sima yi and his family, sun jian, sun ce, sun quan (who claimed to be descended to sun tze)

napoleonic era has some names of marshals and generals. ney, soult etc all actually served bapoleon, so ideal for france.
wittgenstein i think was austro-hungarian but commanded an allied army.

Pershing's first name is John
Pershing and 'Stonewall' Jackson were the only two generals or admirals so far where I thought it was equally (or more) appropriate to reference their commonly used nicknames. 'Black Jack' as a reminder of his service with the Black Cavalry of the Southwest. 'Stonewall' because the average user probably won't know who 'Thomas' Jackson was, and will try to tell me that it's supposed to be Andrew Jackson. And now that I think of it, I'd better fact-check that 'Stonewall' actually was 'Thomas' and not 'James', which for some reason is coming to mind as I type this.
....but this should be a good start :)
I should say so! :)

For each civ how many generals and admirals do you need? In the OP maybe post a list and update it, so we don't give you any doubles.

I was going to start with America and see if I can add a couple. Alexander Patch one of the most underrated American commanders, George McClellan (not one of my favorites), Israel Putnam, Benedict Arnold, what can I say? He is from my home town. Or shall we make him British? William Prescott, Nathanael Greene (correct spelling), P.G.T Beauregard, Dan Sickles, and Hal Moore.

Admirals Raymond Spruance, Frank Fletcher, Thomas Kinkaid, Clifton Sprague, William Southerland. Let me know if you have enough for America.

I don't know that he really meets the standards of a great general, but I've got a suggestion for Austria if you're short on names: Major Franz Hackher. Unfortunately I can't find anything on him in English haha. In 1809 he defended Schlossberg, the fort of Graz, from Napoleonic troops and held out against great odds. There is a statue at the top of Schlossberg in Graz, the Hackher Löwe (Hacckher Lion), in his honor.

I'm probably pretty good for America. I'll try to get a new list up on the OP by mid-morning tomorrow. I found a boat-load of names I need to look through on a CIV4 thread.

I've never been much of a fan of Beauregard, and hot/cold on Sickles. Trying to think of the really excellent younger Union general who was killed in the 'west'. I think he served under Grant, but it may have been before Grant was raised to running the 'west' and before Grant was made lieutentant general.

Nathanael Greene is a really good suggestion for america. His name has popped two or three times since I've started looking into this list. The revolutionary era is something else I'm a bit weak on.

I spent too much time today trying to figure out why sometimes I was getting John Hawkins and sometimes Chester Nimitz in-game assigned to America. Not sure why, but the G&K version of the Nimitz text-key was loading in some (but apparently not all) cases, and in that version of the text key, Chester Nimitz was...tada...named John Hawkins !! Gee, thanks Firaxis

Themistocles for the Greeks as his successful fight against the Persians while Leonidas fought on land. Also Hideki Tojo as general for Japan.

Only one that comes to mind at the moment is General Lyon, pretty sure that's not who you're after. There's also Albert Sidney Johnston, who was one of the Confederates' best generals before his death at Shiloh.

btw totally with you on Stonewall and Black Jack. I tend to refer to them that way myself, but wasn't sure if you wanted the full names or not, so no worries :)

There are a few names I missed on my list that were mentioned here. I'll get the ones I feel are good to use onto the updated lists later today.

Take it as given that any names mentioned in the thread are either being added to the list or were repeats, or I, err, didn't think the historical person was all that, well, 'great'.:)

Bolívar can't be a Brazilian Great General, he was from Gran Colômbia. Some more regional names should be useful, like Bento Gonçalves or Moreira César. As Brazil also had a military dictatorship, president names like Costa e Silva and Emílio Médici may also be Great Generals.
