Nuclear power and weapons figure prominently later in the game but there are few random events which address the possible disasters that can occur in a nuclear powered/armed world. These proposed events mirror actual nuclear events that have occurred and some potential disasters that did not occur. There is also an interesting event based on a very popular movie involving nuclear armageddon.

While trying to build the Manhattan Project, a massive atomic explosion has occurred, obliterating the laboratory that was constructing the project. No one knows what happened. Publicly announce that the mysterious explosion is being investigated. Secretly cancel all plans to try and restart the project. (Event can be repeated)
(occur only when the Manhattan Project is being built)

After the Manhatten Project is built, a famous nuclear scientist who helped build it publicly protests the “Bomb”, claiming that he has “become Death”. He is arrested and charged with treason. Lose one level of relations with other countries.

[Country] launches the first nuclear powered freighter. Hailed by the world as the advent of clean energy sea transportation. Gain one level of relations with all of the other countries.
(MUST have at least three transports and Nuclear Power Plant)

[Country] launches the first nuclear submarine, which makes the first voyage under the North Pole without surfacing. Gain one level of relations with other countries.
(MUST have at least one Nuclear Submarine)

A Nuclear Power Plant in the coastal city [City] has experienced a meltdown after a huge storm has flooded the reactors. All of the Ocean tiles within [City]’s radius are no longer able to support seafood for forty turns. Suffer four Unhappy Faces in [City] for ten turns. The radiation is spreading to other countries [Country] loses one level of relations with other countries.
(MUST have Nuclear Power Plant in coastal [City]).

One of our nuclear submarines has disappeared. The Navy reports that it has been detected on the bottom of the ocean but has been un able to determine why it sank. All other countries have denied responsibility for the sinking. Lose 10% of all espionage points in vain effort to discover what happened.
(MUST have at least two Nuclear Submarines and two Nuclear Missiles)

One of our Jet Bombers has accidentally dropped a nuclear bomb near [City] while on maneuvers. The Air Force is desperately trying to keep the accident secret and locate the bomb.
1) Keep the matter top secret and intensify efforts to find it. 30% chance bomb explodes (nuclear attack on [City] is conducted in which case suffer six Unhappy Faces for ten turns in all cities in [Country])
2) A whistle blower reveals the accident to the public. Massive civil disorder in [City] - suffer ten Unhappy Faces for four turns. Pay 100x Gold for the damages caused by the riots. 20% chance the government falls into chaos and falls.
3) Reveal the emergency to the public and call for calm. Pay 200xGoldto pay for evacuation and search to find the bomb. Lose one level of relations with other countries who view government as irresponsible nuclear power.
(MUST have at least two nuclear weapons)

A political revolt in [Country] has resulted in a splinter group of extremist political revolutionaries stealing a nuclear weapon. They have announced they will launch it unless their demands are met. The world is holding its breath.
1) The sum of all fears has happened. The revolutionaries have launched the nuclear weapon at a foreign city (random city in a country that is closest to [Country] in strength). The other country declares war. Lose two levels of relations with other countries who view [Country] as unable to secure nuclear weapons.
2) Dispatch a special commando team locate and eliminate the threat. 50% chance the operation succeeds - pay 200x Gold in costs. Otherwise, operation fails. Revolutionaries stand down after other countries threaten to wipe out [Country] if they launch the weapon. Lose one level of relations with other countries who view [Country] as unable to secure nuclear weapons.
3) Defuse the situation with intense negotiations. Order the complete unilateral destruction of all nuclear weapons in [Country]. Lose all nuclear armed units. Pay 400x Gold for the decommissioning of the weapons. Gain three levels of relations with all other countries.
(MUST be in the process of a revolution in [Country]
(MUST have at least two ICBMs and at least one other country MUST have at least two ICBMs)

An air force general at an air base in [City] has gone bonkers and secured the airbase, threatening to launch a first strike against other countries to preserve [Country]’s world preeminence. Your advisors say that the general is a fascist and WILL launch the nuclear weapons.
1) Order the assassination of the crazy general. 50% chance attempt succeeds. If not, the general launches a nuclear strike against a foreign city (random city in a country that is closest to [Country] in strength). The other country declares war. Lose two levels of relations with other countries who view [Country] as unable to control their own officers.
2) Publicly order a precision air strike on the Airbase to takeout either the general or the nuclear weapons. Pay 200x Gold to compensate soldiers killed by airstrike. 50% chance the air strike is successful and Airport is lost. If not, the general launches, with the launch being intercepted by the SDI of [Country] or the country (country closest to [Country] in strength with nuclear weapons) that is attacked (if either have SDI). Otherwise, a random city in other country suffers a nuclear attack. The other country declares war. Lose one level of relations with other countries who view [Country] as unable to control their own officers.
3) One of the general’s subordinates takes him into custody and averts nuclear war. Order the complete unilateral destruction of all nuclear weapons in [Country]. Lose all nuclear armed units. Pay 400x Gold for the decommissioning of the weapons. Gain three levels of relations with all other countries.
(MUST have at least two ICBMs and at least one other country MUST have at least two ICBMs)

With public fear mounting due to the ongoing war and the possibility of nuclear war, a number of demonstrations have occurred outside the Airport in [City] where nuclear ICBMs are located. ([Country] must be at war and have nuclear weapons but nuclear weapons cannot have been used and ICBMs must be located in [City]). (Event may be repeated)
