Number of cities and GP

does the number of cities you control have a (negative) effect on GP generation? Does it increase the points needed to obtain a GP?

No, it does not. You can ignore any in-game text that implies otherwise (holdover from early vanilla).

The only possible negative effect is if some city actually generated a type of great person you didn't want. (Such as a puppet generating a Great Merchant thus delaying your capital's next Great Scientist)
