Shinto is the name ascribed to the non-Buddhist religious practices of Japan. The word Shinto ("Way of the Gods") was adopted from the written Chinese combining two kanji: "shin" , meaning gods or spirits (originally from the Chinese word shen); and "to-" , or "do" meaning a philosophical path or study (originally from the Chinese word tao). The terms Kami no michi and kannagara can also be used and the meanings are very similar. Shinto is today thought of as the indigenous religion of Japan. However, It was formed from various local Japanese religious practices over a long period prior to written Japanese history, influenced by Buddhism, Confucianism, and Daoism beginning in the 6th century and first codified with the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki in the 8th century as a response to the influx of "new" religious practices.
