[NFP] Portugal Reveal Video Discussion

Since the Caravel is the last naval melee ship that doesn't cost a resource... Can you build them in later eras again by trading all your coal and oil away?

Not to get too off topic, but I just wanted to say that Prismatic was mostly created to get around the 'invisible city banner' problem, which is why there's so many more colors (and thus a less 'cohesive' palette) than BCC, since it needed to provide a potential unique color for 63 civs.

Back to Portugal, however, it just so happens I'm looking for some input on their unique-color jersey (their primary jersey will still be Blue-on-White) for Prismatic; if any of you have a preference, let me know! Options below:

Just for fun, and in case it helps you, this will probably be my modded pallete for Joao / Portugal when it comes out.

On topic, many has been said already but....
  • Like the civ, seems to have the exploration-trade gameplay many had been asking for. Feels very Portuguese.
  • I too had been expecting a cartography-related library replacement. It has been a university one, tough. Wondering if they are planning to provide earlier Madrassas in the balance patch.
  • Also, count-me in the list of the ones guilty on thinking to use the Feitoria to block "next-to-dock" coast spots
  • Spain indeed needs something in the balance patch.... and Netherlands trade game could also be improved too.
  • Regarding Joao's model... yes there is something in the face, eitther the bockiness, or the "make-up effect" that makes it look low-poly. Probably that is what gives the uncanny feeling to the model.
  • Love the off-shore placement of the feitoria, and the model. Being completely not-destroyable is a bit gamey, but I suppose it is what the engine can offer. (Improvement proposed: give them health bar and shoots like encampments, but allow them to be destroyed). Would be nasty to get at war with Portugal when they have placed several around your cities.
  • The limit of two feitorias per Nao, i think, would make them not that spammable... however the Navigation School helps you building more naos...

+1 sight for range 3 frigates and artillery will be useful.
The extra sight is quite an advantage in other ways, especially on water but also fog busting and general surveillance
Add lief to the mix and the waves are yours.

goodness, you can not let Portugal build the Venetian Arsenal.

So if I'm reading the Feitoria description right, I believe the +4 Gold, +1 Production it provides on its own is as an improvement, and thus goes to the owner of the city where it's planted, yes? So, while frustrating if Portugal slaps one down on you, at least there's a decent benefit from working it, plus it seems like, if indeed Oil is discovered underneath it, you'll immediately start to stockpile it upon discovery, no?

Agree on the yields, but I don't think the ressource extraction is defined. Someone should ask during the stream.

Yeah, that's gonna be a must-build wonder for them...and basically only them.

Too lazy to read the whole thread, but my thoughts:

- Wow, this may be most same-as-civ 5-like civ of any returning civ.

- Time to annoy people by building Feitorias where they want to build fisheries and stuff! But wait, who gets the tile yields? Maybe they won't be so annoyed after all

- Wasn't expecting a science building from Portugal but it seems pretty strong!

- A free trade route when you meet civs? That's pretty OP. Power creep strikes again *cries in Cree and Phoenecian*.

I still think I'd probably pass on the Venetian Arsenal unless I were going for style points. I'm going to be purchasing my Naus outright, or upgrading into them, not hard-building them.

I think this title still belongs to the Incas, literally got ported almost 100% the same to Civ6.

The owner of the tile gets the yields. If Oil is discovered under the Feitoria later, the owner of the tile immediately gets Oil on water without having to research Offshore Oil Rigs. Andrew from FXS likes my comment from above so I guess that is how it works.
Yeah, this might be the first time I actually consider it worth building.
You don't play Brazil on a water map, do you? You will have a literal "blast" playing with the Minas Geraes. Even the Cothon's 50% production towards naval units combines well with the Arsenal.

I think the case is Portugal will build Naus primarily for their build charges, so every extra charge would be beneficial.

And since Portugal will be swimming in the Gold no matter what, "Gold purchasing everything else while hard building Wonders and -25% discounted Naus" is an adequate strategy. The Arsenal will come in handy in this particular strategy.

Is that Oil thing confirmed or are you speculating?

This is brilliant and done four years in advance just for this moment:

Looking forward to Sean Bean brutally killing it like one of the characters he's played.

You can always save a Nau or two un-upgraded and use them for building Feitoria in later era. Or just avoid the Ironclad tech until you have all the possible Feitorias built.

I do imagine that a normal Worker can built it, though.
I hope builders can, sucks to have a UI that can only be built for a period. I don't fancy having all my harbours churning out naos just so I know that if I find a sweet opportunity later, I can build a feitoria.

I'm hoping that it's just a normal UI that naos just happen to have a sweet ability to build as well.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this yet but Portugal would probably be incredibly fun for a one-city challenge! You'll get the trade route count of a full empire no matter how many cities you have. Sort of like V's Venice.
