Question about Aesthetics and buying with faith

In my current game, I founded a pantheon but not a religion, and none of my cities have a religion. I finished the Aesthetics social policy tree, and am in the Industrial Era, and I have plenty of faith (2000+) but I still don't have the option to buy Great Writers, Artists, or Musicians with faith. The option to do so simply doesn't even show up at all in my city purchase screens. Do my cities need to have a religion in order for this to work?

Yup, a city needs a religion to purchase anything with faith.

Thanks for the quick reply, that explains it. I guess I'll have to wait a while to spend my faith then, since none of the civs on my continent managed to get a religion...

You're not restricted to buying things with Faith in the city menu. Have you tried to set your Faith screen to auto-buy Great People? That's what I usually do.

That won't work. Still need a religion in one city.

Can you send some units to the other continent and steal a missionary or Great Prophet to spread that religion to one of your cities? You would have to DOW someone, but that may be a price worth paying.
