Installation and Language

1. What version of Civ4 do I need to play HoTK?

A: HoTK runs only on Beyond the Sword expansion pack. The version of HoTK published on CFC runs on BTS 3.19.

2. What language does HoTK support?

A: HoTK supports English and Simplified Chinese. However, to see Chinese text you need Japanese version of Civ4 and BTS, as well as corresponding version of HoTK.

3. Do I need to install CAR Mod with HoTK?

A: No, CAR Mod do not work with HoTK. Because HoTK already has all the content of CAR and More. If you install CAR with HoTK, the game will not work.

Historical Background:

1. I do not know Chinese history. Is that a problem?

A: No, it's not. We have players who knew nothing about the era, yet became an expert after playing and loving HoTK. First play the Mod, read Civilopedia text if it interest you. If you really love the gaming experience the Mod offers, there are tons of free information available on the internet.

2. How can I get more familiar with this Mod's historical background?

A: There are two books, one is the novel: Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the other is the official history record: Record of the Three Kingdoms. You can get them in book store or try find free versions online. KOEI's RoTK series and Dynasty Warrior series are also good sources of information.

General Mod Content:

1. What's about this Mod that is DIFFERENT?

A: This Mod is a total conversion that reworked everything and added lots of things in the most unique and original way yet every element worked together to create a single coherent experience.

2. What kind of content can I expect in this Mod?

A: You can find all kinds of content that contributes to a better experience: techs, factions, leaders, units, arts, texts, musics, interface, are all in HoTK term now. You can also find unique concepts introduced by HoTK such as heroes, legions, unique promotions and abilities and lots more.

3. Which one to play first: a scenario or random map?

A: I recommend play a scenario first. Because they have historical context and we have put time and effort in polishing them. They are worth your time.

4. How about the playability of random maps?

A: Random maps are playable. Comparing to scenarios, random maps don't have historical situation, but since lots of heroes are now 'unemployed' and recruitable, random maps will give you some pleasant surprise.

5. Are there any guides to get start with?

A: Read AnotherPacifist's Tutorial on how to get started using Liu Zhang, then read Kenjister's general tutorial focusing on Sun Ce. You can also check out the whole Strategy Discussion thread.

6. Is this Mod Multiplayer Compatible?

A: This is our goal. We think we have achieved it. You can try it and tell us the result.

7. There's a new concept introduced in HoTK I don't understand, where to look for answers first?

A: Check the 'HoTK Concepts' section in Civilopedia. Most likely your can find your answer there.

Specific Game Play Questions:

1. How to recruit a hero? How do I convert enemy heroes?

A: You can recruit hero in 'Hero Advisor'. Hero Advisor is the replacement for Corporation Advisor of original BTS. To recruit a hero, just click the 'recruit' text to the right end of each hero's line. You need money to do that, and you need the hero to be old enough and 'unemployed'. As to convert enemy hero, you can do that by defeating them in combat. After defeating them, there's a chance he will surrender. A hero with 100 loyalty to it's current master will not surrender in this way. However, when taking down the last city of an enemy faction, all heroes currently in that city will surrender.

2. Why my hero gets injured after defeated and what it means?

A: Each hero has a hidden 'vitality' value that determines how many times he can be injured in combat. If this limit has been reached, the hero will die. If the hero is the faction's leader, the faction will select a new leader.

3. What does 'S' mean in hero's civilopedia entry?

A: 'S' denotes the highest unit combat level. For example, a hero with a 'S' in melee can command a legion of 5 melee units.

4. How do I create a random hero?

A: When you have accumulated enough combat experience, in BTS a great general will sprawl. In HoTK, instead, you can choose to recruit a existing hero with half price or promote a random hero.

5. What does a hero's loyalty mean?

A: A hero's loyalty controls the chance the hero will surrender in combat. It also influence the money you have to pay to recruit him.

6. Why my starting units change the second time I play the same scenario with the same faction?

A: It's because of a mechanic called 'Dynamic Initial Unit', in a word, you starting unit in scenarios will vary according to the difficulty level you choose. For more information, check out 'HoTK Concepts' in Civilopedia.

Development:

1. What's the big picture of HoTK? What's the next step?

A: The next step of HoTK is to rework the whole Mod around factions. There's no big picture, there's only the next step.

2. I've got feedback and suggestions, are you listening?

A: Yes, yes! Post here or here. We always listen to players, because it's players who play.

3. How can I help HoTK?

A: You can contribute by play our Mod, give us feedbacks and suggestions, post stories and screenshots on our forum, putting HoTK into your signature, hehe. If you are serious, want to make art, write text, or even coding Python and C++, well great! Just PM me and let's discuss it.

4. I want to join HoTK Team.

A: Welcome! As of now (developing V2.5) we need one C++ programmer and one 2D graphic guy. Just PM me if you are interested.

Okay, I'm sure it's historical in purpose and most factions won't need it, but any reasons for no settlers? I usually play Liu Bei (I think :p) but I'm decided to try a quick game with Liu Bou (I think :p) since that faction's ability to generate more culture when at peace goes with my general non-combative playing style. That faction ends up with a lot of 'empty' space and when the Sun Clan started losing cities to the barbarians, it seemed to generate more space.

Now I'm thinking perhaps it would be difficult to get the AI not to try to crank out settlers, but it does seem to leave a lot of southern land relatively open.

One suggestion, as someone not used to Chinese names, a lot of the names are sort of like keeping track of Steve, Steven, Stephen and Stefan. Many times I get a pop-up w/a leader asking me to go to war with a faction and during that pop-up, I can't access the civlopedia so often times I cannot figure out who is who. Perhaps you could make up some sort of 'cheat-sheet' we could print out to keep track of who is who?

The 'no settler' option is there for 2 reasons, first is to limit the total number of cities so the game won't get too slow, the other is to limit building cities in areas which are historically underdeveloped, such as the southern area of China. I can imagine it would be a little restrictive sometimes. This restriction is temporary though, because in future future you'll be able to assign plot to heroes as reward for their service.

The only time the Chinese names got confusing is when other faction leader contact you in diplomacy and ask you to do something to yet another faction, right? Because on scoreboard there's already leader portrait, and on the hover help text too, so it should be much better than previous versions. You could access civilopedia at anytime by pressing F1, I believe. I'll consider putting portrait in the situation you mentioned if that would help.

Hmmm, didn't think to try to bring up the Civlopedia by using the F1 key. Yes, you are correct about what was confusing in trying to remember who was in what clan.

I don't know if it's possible to fix but playing Liu Bei, I often didn't have a lot of the map prior to someone offering to me as part of a deal. Now I can't be 100% on this, but I do seem to recall being asked to fight certain leaders and/or factions even though at the time I had only 'met' them through their scouts. I would think that you shouldn't be able to be asked to go fight someone until you have their territory somewhere on your map. I seem to generate a lot of bad ju-ju for refusing to fight folks I had no idea where they where on the map.

Also, while it may be impossible to code, shouldn't there be some way to make the AI less likely to ask for you to go to war with someone when you are already knee-deep in war? I've been in a lot of situations where I'm fighting a big leader with 1 or 2 vassals and an ally or two and then here comes some leader asking me to help stamp out someone that is A) outside my geographic area and B) I'm not currently fighting. Then I have to take the diplomatic hit for refusing even though I'm barely fighting the legions of my enemies to a draw!

Of course I do wish there was some way to penalize the AI for when a small player boldly asks for help and then gets cranky when you don't help them. I may not want to cut off talking to them, but I wish there was a, "Who do you think you are threatening?" which would keep diplomatic relations open, but then 'warn' the AI that another such 'bold' attempt might result in war. I mean if there has been one thing about Civ I've never liked is sometimes the smallest Civ's will act like they're the Warsaw Pact or something. I've gone to war with Russia (who had like 3 cities) because Catherine 'slapped' me! I mean that's like Thailand telling China "Help me or else!"

Liu Bei: Guy with big ears who wants to revive the Han Dynasty (or so he says)
Yuan Shu: arrogant guy who everybody hates, AI has no chance of ever winning due to his scattered lands and eventually vassalizes to somebody
Cao Cao: Wily Prime Minister with a threatening look in his eyebrow, right smack in the middle of things and usually a bigwig to contend with
Yuan Shao: Pompous guy up north who's so famous that he lost the Battle of Guandu due to senility
The Gongsuns: small players up north (when played by the AI) who you don't need to worry about
Zhang Yan: bandit, nothing to worry about due to poor lands
Zhang Yang: his Revivalist neighbor to the east of Yan, again, AI is inept when playing him
Li Jue: Rebel general who controls Chang An (the ancient capital) and who everybody hates. Formidable opponent once he gets Royal Guards
Sun Ce: Handsome guy who dies at the grand old age of 25 but with a reputation for war that far exceeds his age
Liu Zhang and Liu Biao: Timid guys down SW and south who rarely if ever declare war on people. Liu Zhang is locked in a war against Zhang Lu just north of him, but they just end in stalemate. Good for vassalization if you play nice to them
Han Sui and Ma Teng: warlords far out west who rarely venture into the middle of things. Good to befriend when you're against Li Jue
Lu Bu: sorry ass of a hero who ends up being killed by Cao Cao due to the AI's inept attack skills.

@arkham4269

I understand. I could make AI's war plea be limited to those players who you have already located. I could also make weaker civ's war plea less frequent. That's feasible. But to modify your response to these pleas, such as add a new option as you have described, is not possible. These things are not in SDK, but exe, thus is not moddable.

Yeah, that's sort of what I figured. One thing I miss about Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is you had a lot diplomatic options. My favorite being if an enemy who is at war with you wants peace, you'd have the option of also demanding them stop fighting another faction. This was nice if they were fighting a weak faction and you didn't want the war to continue but you also didn't want your enemy to gobble up that weaker Civ.

Beyond that, make the changes you can make would be nice. I mean I accrue a lot of bad diplomatic effects because I can't really get to the faction they want me to fight.

I just downloaderd HotK 2.4, the MusicPack, Patch F, and CAR 0.2. I suppose, this is also the correct order of installation. If not, which order is it? Thanks. :)

No, CAR Mod do not work with HoTK. Because HoTK already has all the content of CAR and More. If you install CAR with HoTK, the game will not work.

First off let me say that I'm new to forums. Anyway, here's my question:
I'm playing as Cao Cao and just captured the emperor from the White Wave yellow turban leader and am wondering why I cannot select the Emperor civic option. I've tried applying him as a specialist to one of my cities but that didn't seem to help the matter. I also thought that maybe there was only one allowed at a time so I eliminated Yuan Shu and am still unable to change to the civic. Can anyone give me any advice?

Thank you.

PS I'm running version 2.4 of HotK. Also, is there a link to the HotK tutorial somewhere?

The emperor civic can only be run if you believe in Rebellion, which then allows you to build the Temple of Abdication which allows all gov't civics (including Emperor). Or you can play as Yuan Shu (who had delusions of grandeur and starts with Emperor civic already on), who is surprisingly easy to play a domination game in the small map.

I've petitioned for the Emperor civic to be available to all after researching Imperial Academy (late tech that's kinda useless right now).

Are permanent alliances disabled in the scenarios?

I buttered up a potential ally (shared war and +25 diplo), beelined the tech tree to get permanent alliances, and now the option does not seem to be available.

Will you use your mod also for the creation of a new (BTS-compatible) "Chinese Unification" mod or scenario?
