Tell that to the Lombard League. Cavalry has its place, but it wasn't the be-all, end-all, and contemporary commanders knew it.

I agree. Cavalry is insanely powerful in RTW and only ridiculously powerful in M2TW.

Especially the generals have too powerful units. They seem like some superheroes of some kind. Ridiculous. Still, R:TW is the best TW game I know.
