SGOTM 20 - Misfit Gypsy Nuts

Thanks, nocho! Hopefully in a few days I will be available for turnset duties again. But right now I do not trust myself not to do something stupid/crazy. If I am not supposed to drive I probably should not try to play a turnset.

I'm back home again, and ready to be more active again.
I think PPP with revisions looks good.
I have only one thing, Is there a reason we are not doing binary research?

Glad to have you back :) I'll put you back into the rotation after Ron.

I'm not sure why we aren't using binary research. Could be that it is just set that way in the screenshot to give an indication.

Reasons for binary reasearch that I can think of:
  1. Getting better return by waiting for +%:science: buildings, eg, libraries (not applicable)
  2. Avoid investing too much into a tech that you later pick up in trade (not applicable)
  3. Getting better return by waiting for AI, thereby getting KnownCivWTech bonus (applicable)
  4. Losses through rounding errors... I think these are minimal to non-existent.
  5. Option to change priority tech path later with new information

For clarity:

The roster order is:
  1. Ronnie1 Up Now! :scan:
  2. McArine On Deck :p
  3. haphazard1
  4. nocho Just Played :goodjob:

Rounding errors can be significant early in the game. I am not sure exactly what our total commerce/turn is up to, but from our 100%/0% research outputs it is certainly well under 100/turn. So losing 1 commerce/turn due to rounding (the most you can lose, and sometimes you don't depending on the exact values) is probably still between 1-2%, and might be as much as 3%. Once you start getting libraries in place or commerce/turn goes over 100 I tend to stop worrying about binary research as much, but for now it is still worth it.

Another reason for binary research is to sometimes have enough cash on hand for an emergency upgrade. It only really helps during the "off" portion of the cycle, but it does sometimes come in handy.

If I am remembering the save correctly when I was preparing the PPP, we can not finish Writing this turn. So one turn of research off, then finish Writing and start into Alphabet until Victoria will agree to a trade (hopefully she will not be researching HBR herself) should work.

My understanding of :science:/:gold: rounding in the game. Spoilered because some might find it boring :p
Spoiler :

I don't think :commerce:/:science:/:gold: works quite like that. If you have some odd number of :commerce:, like 23 for example you will still get a total of :science: + :gold: = 23. Eg, if rate is 50%, :science: = 23*0.5 = 11 due to rounding. :gold: = :commerce: - :science: = 12. None is 'wasted' due to rounding.

(Ignoring :espionage: and :culture: slider possibilities, they would also be subtracted from :commerce: with remainder left as :gold:)

Where you can gain/lose from rounding is after the OptionalTech bonus and KCwT bonus are applied. If you had a bonus of 20% say (typical for most techs) then 10:science: gets a bonus of 2, but 9:science: gets only 1 (1.8 rounded down). This applies after the :science:/:gold: slider, ie, binary research won't change this.

If you wanted to get really picky about it, you might find that 90% slider has less rounding 'loss' than 100%. Problem then is trying to predict your hidden bonuses (OptionalTech,KCwT) since you wouldn't ordinarily be aware of them until you advance to the next turn and inspect how much :science: was actually applied to the research project.

I guess I got it again.

Been on a quick 2 night outing with my wife and extended family, I'll look at it more later!

Now I have read backwards! H1 never played. :( Hope you heal quickly!

I am still very familiar with the current situation. I intend to wait 1 turn and then DOW with 8 units available next turn! 5 turns until a pause unless something wonky happens before that.

Thanks, Ronnie1! I am starting to feel better, but am still a fair distance from feeling good. Hopefully a few more days will see me most of the way back to normal.

adrianj, on rounding losses I generally look at the F2 screen for the total commerce values. The known civs and prereq bonuses get applied after that, so I do not consider them. But if I have something like 35 total commerce and no multiplier buildings (too early for libraries or markets, etc.), then at 100% science I get 35 beakers/turn and 0 gold/turn. Zero research obviously gives 0 bpt and 35 gpt. But set the research slider at 90% and you will see 31 bpt and 3 gpt. Total bpt + gpt of 34, so you have lost 1 commerce/turn, or approximately 3% of your total commerce. It appears that the game uses a floor function to round down both science and gold, using the percentages for each (90% and 10% in this example). It does not round down the science and then give you whatever is left as gold, it calculates separate percentages and rounds both down. If you use more sliders I believe you would see 3 or 4 separate rounding calculations, so you might lose even more than 1 commerce/turn.

Hmm :hmm:

Sounds like I need to review my assumptions. Good work :goodjob:

Played a 4 turns that went according to plan and part of turn 5.

We captured Istanbul on the 3rd turn of the war! We took a couple losses as expected. There were no spears there the turn before, but one appeared IBT. :( We are healing a bit now.

We just got Alphabet after investing a few turns from Julius Caesar! We have a lot of trade options now, and will have more next turn after we can trade Alphabet.

I want to 3 pop whip a Library in SL. We will have 2  with growth next turn, and the turn after that we can 3 pop whip it for decent overflow and then turn science back on.

I want to send a 2 HA team to pillage the copper.

How did Suli get Rheims? Was it ever a French city?, it must have been because there is French culture on the wheat east of Istanbul.

The barb holy island is 3 tiles wide.

Do we want to sign OB with everyone?

Nice going!

Which HAs are you going to use to disconnect copper? Those near Bursa?

Seems Copper Summit can have 17 hpt, or a HA every 3 turns, not too bad. HF I'd probably whip the HA now. Not entirely sure about library whip in SL. Shouldn't we spit out a few more HAs first?

In any case, going 0% research now might make sense until we get a library (or 2) out, unless we want to tech something asap.

I suppose Rheims was captured by barbs and the Sulei captured it from barbs?

I'd OB with those AIs whose land we want to scout (red Russia maybe) and where we might profit from trade routes (if there's trade connection that is).

Tech trades: HBR for IW with Augustus and Sailing and Masonry from red Russians?

Which HAs are you going to use to disconnect copper? Those near Bursa?
Yes
Not entirely sure about library whip in SL. Shouldn't we spit out a few more HAs first?
It had a lot of whip anger and it grows so fast, I thought it may be prudent to whip the Lib and then keep going on HA's. It may be a bad call also.:dunno: We could just stack whip anger for a while and not worry about it in the short run.
In any case, going 0% research now might make sense until we get a library (or 2) out, unless we want to tech something asap.
Mathematics!

Math is compelling indeed. :) Especially if we also want to rush through a 2nd and maybe even a 3rd AI. If you think we'll be fine on units vs Sulei then ok with lib whip.

Nice work, Ronnie1! :goodjob:

Can we get IW for less than HBR from anyone? I guess Catherine would be the one to try.

I think we want IW for certain. Sailing and Masonry would be nice to have as well. Meditation probably too cheap to spend a point of WFYABTA to get.

Louis has Math; Napoleon has MC! No way they will trade them any time soon of course, but at least we get a little known tech bonus.

For our next tech priority...hmmm. Math would be nice for chops, and to bring us closer to Elepults. (Not to mention the always helpful Currency -- how is our economy doing with war costs?) But I would really love to see something that would improve our happiness situation. There are those gems south of HF, which added to our silver would make MC a nice target. MC would also allow us to clear out barb triremes and use all that seafood. Or we could push for Monarchy to help solve our happiness issues. Being able to grow our cities several sizes larger would be very powerful, more useful even than chops I think. Maybe we should grab Meditation in a deal, then Priesthood (very cheap) and Monarchy?

Good job on the warring :)

Catherine wont give up Iron working for AH and Writing :-(
I don't see a way we can get IW without giving out HBR, alternatively we put a turn into IW, and see if Catherine will trade.
But we should be able to get masonry, sailing and IW for HBR.

I agree that cutting of the copper is important, but how much would it delay our total conquest of Suleiman?
And it looks like we need sailing badly, to get across to Rheims.
I'd say Erdine and Ankara are both keepers, while Bursa should be razed.

Ronnie1 are you planning another 5 turns, or should I take over?

I was planning 5 more.

Looking great Ron  Possibly we could get another screenshot showing an overview of Suli's lands?

Tech Trades
We don't need to try get everything straight away with HBR - next turn we will be able to share Alphabet.

With Catherine, what kind of cheap stuff can we get for Writing+AH? By giving her Writing we will be able to give her Alphabet next turn. Louis also does not know Alphabet, nor IW.

eg,
T0: Writing+AH to Catherine for Sailing or Masonry
T1: Alphabet to Catherine for IW + Masonry or Sailing
T2: Alphabet and IW available to trade to Louis... hopefully Maths comes available.

If any of the deals are one-sided, perhaps we can request them to Stop Trading with one of the other bloc?

Unless we get a great deal, or at least a fair deal, we should avoid trading with Peter, Augustus and Napoleon.
