Slow Game Blog...A Long Alternate History of Ireland...

I know it's been a long time since I updated here, so here's a longer run with a bit of action, too:

1066 AD
Rí Antaine is invited to attend the wedding of Prince Willem Konijerk and Princess Marie du Fontenac in Amsterdam.

1069 AD
An Uzbek longbow unit have distinguished themselves in Irish wargames. As the stability of the English nation weakens, preparations along the border become more tense.

1072 AD
Despite the political strains, an open borders agreement is eventually signed with England.

1087 AD
Christian missionaries arrive in Kernow.

1111 AD
Antaine cancels the open borders agreement with England after an English revolt takes place in Kernow.

1129 AD
Contact is made with a new civilization in western Iberia, the Portugese.

1132 AD
A local legend in Wexford gains some renown, bringing in tourists and treasure hunters and boosting local commerce.

1135 AD
Portugal officially adopts Christianity.

1150 AD
The Vikings convert to Christianity

1165 AD
A lavish festival in celebration of Rí Antaine’s achievements fills the streets of Teamhair na Rí

1180 AD
The Discovery of paper allows for maps to be traded with a number of other civilizations.

1189 AD
In response to a Viking overture, Rí Antaine declares war on England. English horsemen enslave Irish workers in northern Wales.

1201 AD
During the Siege of London, the city defenses are reduced to nothing. A unit of Bulgar mercenaries annihilates a unit of Irish swordsmen in an ambush around Nottingham.

1204 AD
Irish forces sack and burn London to the ground; Saxon peasants become an underclass in Irish society as they slowly assimilate, dropping the English language for Gaelic and adopting Irish patronymic systems and social structure.

Very nice. I downloaded this mod-mod a few days ago and I love it. Except I killed the English the moment they spawned, and then moved on to burn Oslo to ground when the Vikings DOWed me. :p I have a question about the UHV. When it says foreign culture, does that mean every tile in the Isles has to be 100% Irish, or does it mean that I just have to control every tile there? And while I'm at it, does a stability map exist for the Irish civ?

i don't believe there's a pictoral map per se, but there is a discussion (i believe) of precisely which tiles were in it either in the download thread or the development thread (now old...might have to hunt for it a bit...I'll see if I can locate it myself).

I may be wrong, but I believe the native area is ireland itself, the safe area is all of the british isles and the broader area is the same as the english (under the premise that if Ireland dominated england from the start, the british empire could have been the Gaelic Empire)...but there was much tweaking that went on there.

I'm also interested to know if you encounter a problem with the malinese amassing huge sums of money (like, in the billions of gold). That issue was just raised on the download thread in the other forum.

As for the culture...I *believe* it means no non-green tiles on the british isles at the turn of the requisite year (but not before), not 0% on any tile. I'm also interested to hear feedback on that.

...and however the british usually handle australia, the US and india...theoretically...

1207 AD
Having won over increasing numbers of the faithful, the Spanish monarch now exerts more influence over the Papacy than the Irish.

1243 AD
A politically arranged wedding between the ruling Dutch and German families collapses, adding to instability in both countries.

1252 AD
A Christian community is founded in Graz as preparations are underway for Irish resettlement of the north bank of the Thames.

1264 AD
After ordering the land to lie barren for generations, Rí Antaine begins an organized reconstruction of London. An attempt is made to call the city Tamais, but “London” seems to have stuck to the region, a throwback to Roman times.

1288 AD
The monarch of a new nation, the Turks, makes contact with the Irish. Not long afterward, the Turkish nation is converted to Islam.

1300 AD
A colossal center of academics and learning is founded at Teamhair by Rí Antaine. What began as an institution dedicated to preservation and propogation of the ancient Brehon legal system has now begun teaching a variety of subjects. Continental scholars feel that the University of Seanchóir* is destined for worldwide renown.
*Irish for “Ancient (Old) Justice”

Years of godlessness in the French city of Brest allowed Islam to take root in the heart of Christian Europe. Aonghus Mac Leod, a missionary from Dún Éideann successfully spread the Christian faith in the formerly Celtic town. Construction is begun on St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Teamhair na Rí.

Word has come of a plague erupting in Lisbon.

1357 AD
The plague hammers most of Spain and makes the jump to Teamhair. Other Irish cities try to prevent its spread to their own streets. The monastery of St. Colm Cille in Dún Éideann develops a plan to bring Christianity to the heathen cities in Viking lands. Construction on a ship, the Colm Cille Naofa, is almost complete.

yeah...I'm a teacher with a busy semester, so I'm now out of the habit of firing up civ each morning for a turn or two (takes me longer to load the mod than to play and blog the turn, lol), but I intend to see it through.
