Starting in the mountains?

Well, I started an American Campaign.....and I start in the mountains. I see a body of water...great! I'll settle there and start building up with one city, maybe make another. And get sailing going. It takes me 4 turns to get to the Water.

I get sailing going, and what do I spy? I'm trapped between two Ice shelves...awesome! I think get sacked by roaming barbarians and the games over....what a start! Time to try again LOL.

As the Polynesians, I once built a trireme in a coastal city only to find myself master & commander of a landlocked ocean (like the Caspian Sea). D'oh.

That is a real drag!! In my attempt at Ghandi 3 city I started on coast, it was like 15 Hex's long, so I thought ocean !! Built up my 3 cities, make a Carvel to explore the map, and 2 turns later found it was an inland sea!! Real depressing, however, rather be locked by an inland sea then ice shelves!!

In IV, I remember France being cut off from the rest of the Pangaea by a mountain range. I took him down, but he had a pretty good navy.
