State of the Empire - Term VI

Turnlog:

Accept 500 gold from FREE.

Completed:

Stealth bomber in Istanbul.
Modern armor in Yanagiba.
Worker in Zar’roc.
Stealth bomber in Facon.

All set to something…

Unit Moves:

Spoiler :

Recon, recon, recon. Find 2 privateers, but only one is within range of a destroyer. We sink it with no damage to our destroyer.

Since we are not attacking FREE yet, we continue bombing Council. First up – we recon their city closest to 640 shields The Gulag:

There are only 2 tiles that The Gulag could be working, and neither of them is producing any shields, so we move on to recon The Silo:

It is rioting, that’s nice. There are a few tiles unguarded that could be producing shields so we take care of them.

Tiles damaged:

W-NW of The Silo – rails, road, mine destroyed; cratered.
W-SW of The Silo - rails, road, mine destroyed; cratered.
N-NE of The Silo - rails, road, mine destroyed; cratered.

1 miss.

Next up, I want to hit The Igloo. We killed all its citizens, but we didn’t do much to its terrain, and I don’t want it to become a threat again suddenly if Council adds workers to it. Recon:

Hmm, looks like we did more damage to its terrain than I remember. Even still, we will take out its remaining improved unguarded tiles even though they are barricaded.

Tiles damaged:

E-NE of The Igloo – barricade, rails, road, fortress destroyed; cratered.
E-S of The Igloo - barricade, rails, road, fortress destroyed; cratered.
S-SE of The Igloo - barricade, rails, road, fortress destroyed; cratered.

1 miss

With no more important tiles vulnerable, we kill as many of The Gulag’s citizens as we can.

The Gulag:

7 citizens killed.
5 misses.

And The Gulag is size 1. The Silo’s citizens are about the only remotely relevant place to hit. We’re out of planes for now, so next turn, they will be our target.

Spoiler :
Recon – we find 1 Council privateer, but we have nothing in range to sink it.

Back to smashing Council. Recon The Silo:

They left one tile available for us to hit so 2 bombers later, it is unimproved and cratered. Tile E-N of The Silo – rails, road, and mine destroyed; cratered.

Next we hit The Silo itself trying to kill citizens:

4/4 Modern Armor -> 2/4.
Miss.
3/3 Modern Armor ->2/3.
Citizen killed.
Citizen killed.
3/3 Modern Armor ->2/3.
2/3 Modern Armor ->1/3.

Well that sucks.

2/4 Modern Armor ->1/4.

Miss.
Shot down by anti-aircraft fire.

Time to rethink this. We really don’t want to be losing stealth bombers before our mega-war with FREE, and it is not that important to continue to do damage to the Council, so I think we should go for softer targets. A quick check of the spreadsheet indicates that The Arboretum is now Council’s most productive city and in fact is closer to building a spaceship than The Silo. A quick recon shows:

Undefended except for the barricades, so we will hit The Arboretum’s tiles starting with food:

E-SE of The Arboretum: rail, road, irrigation destroyed; cratered.
N of The Arboretum: rail, road, irrigation, radar tower destroyed; cratered.
E of The Arboretum: rail, road, mine destroyed; cratered.
S-SE of The Arboretum: rail, road, mine destroyed; cratered.
SW of The Arboretum: rail, road, mine destroyed; cratered.
SE of The Arboretum: rail, road, mine destroyed; cratered.

2 misses.

Nice stack of FREE boats found, but not their aircraft carriers unfortunately:

More FREE boats but again no carriers:

Found 1 FREE Nuclear Sub 3E-1N of their smaller stack of boats.

Unit Moves:

Spoiler :

Investigate Kazgungudom for 164 gold. Picture in FREE diplo thread.

Recon reveals 2 Council privateers (out of range) but nothing dangerous.

The Aerie is Council’s most productive city currently, so we send a stealth fighter to check it out:

Barricades are too annoying to bother with unless there are no other choices, but we will hit the other tiles:

NW of The Aerie: Rails, irrigation, road destroyed; cratered.
S of The Aerie: miss 3 times, then stop bothering.
W of Chamsuri’s Cove: miss, then road destroyed; cratered.

Target The Aerie directly:

Courthouse destroyed.
Citizen killed.
Miss.

Pause for a bit. The Aerie is now size 6. We have 12 bombing runs remaining. We might as well send a stealth fighter to recon The Arboretum as that might be a useful city for them.

There are a couple vulnerable tiles so:

E-N of The Arboretum: Rails, mine, road destroyed; cratered.
E-S of The Arboretum: Rails, mine, road destroyed; cratered.

What else is even worth hitting at this point? Aim at The Arboretum directly:

Airport destroyed.

Unit Moves:

Spoiler :

Spend 9608 safely sabotaging production in Kazgungudom:

Spend 102 gold attempting to replant a spy in FREEland but fail.

Raise luxuries to 10% - maneuver some MPs around so that no cities should riot even if FREE cuts our luxury deal.

Recon – nothing.

Bombard a privateer to 1 hp then sink it with a veteran destroyer hoping for a promotion but no luck. At least our attacker stayed 4/4.

Council’s best city is now The Chamber, so we send a stealth fighter over to check it out:

Bombs around The Chamber:

Tile W of The Chamber – road, fortress destroyed; cratered.
Tile SW of The Chamber – road, fortress destroyed; cratered.
Tile S-W of The Chamber – fortress destroyed; cratered.
Tile NE of The Chamber – rails, road, fortress destroyed; cratered.
Tile N-NE of The Chamber – fortress destroyed; cratered.
Tile N-E of The Chamber – barricade, road, fortress destroyed; cratered.

1 miss

Every tile The Chamber can work is now cratered.

Bombing The Chamber directly:

7 citizens killed.
7 misses.

The Chamber is now size 1.

The next most productive town is The Silo again. Recon:

It looks like they actually care about that city, but even it is 18 turns away and not that many workers can be added to it to speed it up, so we look for a softer target. Council’s road system is worth destroying since eventually we have to land somewhere, so we look at The Gulag to see what roads are still paved:

That is kind of annoying. I don’t want to do any more recon because I want at least 2 fighters on air superiority, so I arbitrarily decide to pound tiles around The Treasury hoping they are unguarded:

Tile SE of The Treasury – road, irrigation destroyed (turns out that one was already cratered)
Tile E of The Treasury – rails, road, irrigation, fortress destroyed; cratered.

We are out of bombers.

Locate FREE’s subs – I’d like to make sure our carriers are out of their range, but we have to start moving our navy north to be in position for 295. FREE’s big stack is still close to where it was (5N-1E north of Sid City - I didn’t leave anything next to it to avoid attracting suspicion). I don’t know what happened to my pictures of the subs, but one was 7E-1NE of The Chamber, and the other was immediately E of our main stack of boats.

Recon uncovers a couple Council privateers, one of which we sink just because we can.

Much of the turn is spent massing naval power in and near Kafa so we are in position to attack FREE on our 294.

Our stack of carriers, transports, etc. has to start moving north with some intensity to be able to arrive on time.

We continue the trashing of Councilland and take out a few units that were left alone guarding tiles.

SE-SE of The Silo:

Modern Armor: 4/4->3/4->1/4->destroyed.

I take lots of pictures to mark FREE’s boats’ locations. Our first four nuclear subs head out into the water toward FREE. These will be the final subs in the ship chain where the nukes will actually be launched from. Unfortunately, they end the turn in FREE’s sight.

Our main naval stack heads north away from Councilland to rendezvous with our subs next turn.

Our workers mine a couple irrigated tiles near Scymitar – it will be in negative food and have significant shield overrun, but I don’t want pollution making us miss the United Nations.

Recon of homelands reveal nothing.
See a couple FREE naval stacks in our attack zone.
Throw 4 nukes –

#1 sinks 12 of 22 of FREE’s boats near our attack zone.
#2 hits Freedom Central killing 6 citizens and destroying an airport (at least).
#3 hits southeast of Citadel of Ur but only kills 1 citizen in Citadel of Ur. I guess we need to hit cities directly whenever possible.
#4 hits Kazgungudom and kills 6 citizens (but misses the airport).

Our stealth bombers go after FREE’s naval stacks. We are not too lucky on the first stack as we have to use 12 stealth bombers to sink 4 ships, and we lose 1 stealth bomber and take 2 hps damage to the destroyer used to sink the final ¼ cruiser.

The attack on the southern stack of 10 goes better as we take only 1 stealth bomber more than the minimum and lose no stealth bombers but do lose another 2 hps on the destroyer used to sink the final redlined FREE ship.

We have 8 stealth bombers and 2 bombers to go. I think it would be good to bomb Citadel of Ur since it is FREE’s most productive city, and we can’t reach it with tactical nukes.

We kill 2 2/4 mech infantry, 5 citizens, and destroy a stock exchange.

Set mobilization to war-time.

We sink 2 privateers because we can. One destroyer stays 4/4, the other stays 5/5.
We find a FREE destroyer in the open seas generally northwest of Freeborn, bombard it to ¼ and sink it getting a regular battleship a promotion to 4/4.

We leave 1 empty transport “threatening” Sugar-Free Wheaties. Otherwise our boats retreat and spread out for the most part.

Send a stealth fighter to recon the 4 easternmost cities of FREE’s core:

Freedom Central still has no defensive units in it making it seem possible to capture next turn.

Hit Thombriel with a nuke knocking it to size 6. Thombriel had a mech infantry on top, but now its top unit is a 1/3 stealth bomber. On the way over there, we find FREE’s nuclear sub that sunk one of our subs last turn – sink it with a bomber.

There are some of our planes that can only reach SFW and Thesso so we bomb there hoping to hit planes/boats. Our first 4 bombers hit buildings in SFW, but our fifth and sixth redline and then destroy a stealth bomber. There are no planes in Thesso as we hit a mech infantry first.

We continue through cities looking for planes and destroy 7 total before setting up transports for next turn.

The Council waters are fairly complicated, but we successfully clear the waters losing 1 cruiser although some of our ships are vulnerable if the enemy has anything else in the area.

There is a FREE cruiser in the port of Freeborn.

I rename all our subs clever things so I can make sure I don’t mess up the chaining, and we get 3 nukes within a tile of Freedom Central.

Recon Freedom Central.

Nuke #1 lands east of Freedom Central killing 1 marine and 1 worker and leaving 3 units 2/4.
Nuke #2 lands south of Freedom Central killing 1 modern armor, and Freedom Central is unguarded!!
We have an extra nuke for something.

East of Freedom Central we kill a 2/4 mech with a stealth bomber, then a 2/4 modern armor captures Freedom Central!

We sell all 4 improvements in Freedom Central for a total of 205 gold.

The capital moved to Marad-Dur, so nuking a city like Azurra Coast doesn’t look very appealing anymore, so we throw the third nuke at the newly first ring city of Liberty Bell.

Nuke #3 hits Liberty Bell killing 5 citizens and at least 1 worker.

With not much else to shoot at, our bombers take aim at Thessauronicleus:

Stealth Bomber: Bank destroyed.
Stealth Bomber: University destroyed.
Stealth Bomber: 4/4 Mech infantry->1/4 and it is still on top.
Stealth Bomber: Citizen killed.
Stealth Bomber: Citizen killed.
Stealth Bomber: 1/4 mech infantry destroyed. 2/4 marine appears on top.
Stealth Bomber: 2/4 marine killed. The city is unguarded.

Tile SW of Thessauronicleus:

Stealth Bomber: 4/4 marine -> 2/4.
Stealth Bomber: 2/4 marine killed.

4/17 modern armor army captures Thessauronicleus and 9 gold.
Sell a factory for 60 gold.

Tile 5 SW of Louise:

Stealth Bomber: 4/4 destroyer -> ¾
Stealth Bomber: ¾ destroyer ->2/4.
Stealth Bomber: 2/4 destroyer sunk.

Kill some miscellaneous units before leaving FREE’s territory:

S-S-S of Freedom Central:

4/4 modern armor vs. 2/4 marine -> ¾ modern armor.

S-S of Freedom Central:

8/16 modern armor army vs. 2/4 modern armor -> 7/16 modern armor army.

S-S-E of Freedom Central:

7/16 modern armor army vs. 2/4 mech infantry -> 4/16 modern armor army.

Finally, we start working over their new capital Marad-Dur:

Unit Moves:

Spoiler :

We have a very successful nuke sinking all except the transport which is easily taken care of by destroyers. No land units were aboard the transport.

I decide to use other ships to bombard FREE’s boats in their cities to keep them from being repaired and so we can hopefully sink them with planes in a turn or two. However, when we move next to the cities, we discover that they have no land units in them, and we have a transport in range. A marine hops over to the island, and we capture Sid City.

We spend 22 gold investigating Martin Luther King Jr. to see how many units are in it:

Interesting notes – they seem to have war weariness :), but how do they have 5 sources of aluminum but no other resources??

Anyway, we unload our modern armor army who kills the modern armor, but I didn’t realize that was a hill so it then captures Sid City but doesn’t have movement left to capture MLK. I’m not sure I played that the best way possible but too late now.

Next we batter The Silo some more taking out its only 2 roaded tiles.

Then we take out the tile southeast of Chamsuri’s Cove to insure that no tactical nuke can reach the coast this turn. While we are doing that, we see a jet fighter in Chamsuri’s Cove and take a couple shots at that but kill a citizen and destroy a courthouse instead of damaging it.

We sink 3 FREE boats off the coast of Babeland with stealth bombers and eliminate one of Council’s privateers with a destroyer.

Transports are moving toward FREE’s remaining small island.

Whip a worker in Sid City – this worker will become an airfield, and we will airlift other workers/a few units over.
A transport carrying only a 2/4 marine “threatens” The Nursery and The New Yard. It is defended by 2 destroyers (Council has 8 bombers, so 1 destroyer may not have been enough to prevent death by planes).
I think Babeland is now 100% barricaded on non-coastal tiles.

Investigate Dusty Harbor for 74 gold – I know it is not a priority, but if it is easy to take, why not? Only 1 mech defending it, and we can destroy a plane. Spend 26 gold on Monte Cristo and 57 on Footloose - one mech defending each. We need at least 2 modern armor to take both, so we can’t bring a marine army. We will have to use a marine (or more).
Attempted this turn and failed losing 2 marines. We will try again next turn.
As we are shifting subs around, we see that The New Yard is undefended so we capture it, sell improvements and abandon it.

Sink all FREE’s boats that we can including their nuclear sub. Find 3 boats that we cannot sink this turn.

Move a transport within range of The Nursery for next turn.

Attempt to kill 3 citizens in The Silo with stealth bombers so we don’t have to worry about it later, but only kill 2 and miss a lot.
