Strats for Catching Up From Island Starts

The most obvious strat for getting current with other civs has not been mentioned here.

Beat the techs out of your opponents!

When you take an enemy to the brink of destruction, they will be willing to give you just about anything for peace. On this month's GOTM, which is emperor level, I was able to get 5 techs, all the gold, and 2 workers from one of my first enemies when I took them down to 1 city. This was in 1600 BC.

I can honestly say I've NEVER had a lone island start, even though I've tried multiple times. What settings do you use?

ill tell u as soon as i can remember them

I use archapelago huge 16 civs and 80% water. It gives me roughly a one in three chance of getting my own island.

BTW my first game was on a lonely island

Yeah but I hardly ever play on standerd maps. I like maps as big as my ego. And 'couse they don't have super immense I just settle for huge
