Team Problem

A buddy and I are playing on a LAN and trying to team up but I can't for the life of me figure out what setting to toggle on or even where to go to allow us to do so.

I keep reading how great it is to team up, but I can't find how to get it going in the first place.

Any help or even a link to something already written would be appreciated.

Are you talking about a Permanent Alliance? This feature allows you to make a team with a player in-game. To make Permanent Alliances, the first thing you have to do is at the beginning of the game, you check the box that says "Allow Permanent Alliances," or something to that effect. Once the game starts, you must reseach Communism, then you can make an Alliance in-game.
