Tired of A-Bombs? How about The All-Time Greatest (Peacefull) Inventions Thread!

Knight-Dragon already said air conditioning, and today its 92 degrees F here in Milwaukee. VERY humid too.

I think I will stay inside and post in my dry 67 dgree F apartment. :D

Fez Monk already mentioned beer, and that was going to be my #5 favorite invention.
Also wine. I love wine.

Imagine, thousands of years ago someone ate or drank rotten grapes and got a good buzz off of it. "Hey! I like this! I'll call it vino!"

#4 is aircraft.

One of the great pleasures of my life is flying. Even on a plain old pasenger jet.

Last October I flew to Arizona in the wake of the terror attacks, and still enjoyed it.

During my Army years, I flew on Huey and Blackhawk helos. THAT was fun!
Cruising at treetop level doing 150+ miles a hour with the doors open and your feet dangling out the side. Woo-hoo! :D
I miss that.

I never got to jump out of a plane, but I repeled from 90 feet.
Someday I will jump, it costs about $100-$200 for about 30 seconds.

No, not stupid. Just really pointless.

If you can get enough light to make the flashlight work, why do you need a flashlight in the first place?

I think the idea is that you charge its battery up in sunlight
during the day; and then use it in the dark at night.

I would have to go with electricity, or more specifically, the lightbulb.

We would all be going to bed at dusk if there were no lightbulb. How boring (AND non productive)

Nice Avatar Joe, but you need a Big Red One instead of the powder keg. :)

I wasnt in the 1st Infantry Division, I was in the 10th Mountain.
2nd Battalion / 14th Infantry (Golden Dragons).

Why would I want a "Big Red One"?

Or are you just being silly... :p :D

I thought you were stationed at Fort Drum too.

I would have to say the A-bomb....

Oh... that wasn't allowed... then I'll say the A-bo... no... err....

The... er... pocket radio... yeah... that's definitely it...

:D :groucho:

I am stationed at Ft. Drum, but my heart is still in the "Iron Brigade".

"No mission to difficult, no sacrifice too great, DUTY FIRST"

The Honorable Discharge will be a wonder to see someday! :D

And I was being silly! :p

Air Conditioning is an important one, especially if you don't have it!:(

Hey you guys, (FF and Joe) quit thread-jackking!

I was an E-6 in 505 PIR, the Panthers, a REAL outfit, so shuddup!

You know, there was alot of military hardware (besides weapons) that was pretty cool to mess around with.

NODs (Night Optical Device) for one. For you civilians slackers, thats like the basement scene from Silence of the Lambs. You can see in the dark, but everything is green.

GPS (Global Positioning System) was another good one, but slightly inacurate. I could do better with a good map and a compass.
Still a neat concept though. I'm sure its gotten alot better by now.

Satellite phones were probably my favorite. I see that CNN and other news networks have satellite video-phones now, but the pictures are crude.
Someday, thats going to be a staple household item. Just like in science fiction.

@AoA: BAH, a dirt dart! ;)

A real unit is one that RIDES into battle, not flutters.:p

On Topic: Another military development that made life alot easier for us was the internet. Without the early work like that, there would be no 'net as we know it.
