With Civ5 land units can embark and cross water or ocean, depending on Tech. However a naval invasion from one continent to another continent with dozens of tiles of ocean to cross with dozens of land units is hard work.

The Civ5-map features 2 types of water : shallow coastal water and deep ocean.

My suggestion is to re-introduce transport-ships for different eras which may carry up to 3 land units. Transport ships may travel ocean tiles as well as coastal tiles, they may travel at a higher speed than embarked land units in their landing boats and they may have a slightly higher sight range. If a transport is sunk, all loaded units are destroyed, too.

Landing boats should be restricted to shallow coastal water for realism.

Prior to a D-Day-Landing operation, Transport ships (parked some tiles from the coast away) may place the transported land-units in their landing boats in shallow water so that the land units can reach shore the next turn for D-Day.

If a Landing Operation does not require to cross ocean tiles, transports are not required.

Transports may pick up / load the land units either in a coastal city or the units embark and meet in coastal water where they are picked up by the transport, very similar to carrier and aircrafts.

It is also thinkable to give destroyers and other ships 1 slot for land units.
(In WW2 battle of Norway in 1940 the Germans used a group of destroyers to transport their (mountain) infantry to Narvik in time.)
