Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 241
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ //////////////////////////////////////
Welcome to the 241st game in the GOTM V Training Series!
This Series allows new and old Civilization V fans to try out many features from Civ5's expansions and DLCs in a friendly environment. Participants are encouraged to post questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads (described below). Each game will specify the Civ you will play and the Victory Condition to strive for. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread.

MUST READ!
Our most sacred rule: Do not replay any turns!
If you make a mistake, accept it, and try to recover through game-play. To ensure fair play and prevent results exclusions, please set your Autosaves to "1 turn". In the event of a computer crash while playing, just reload to the previous autosave, then play on the same way you played it the first time. Please let Leif or me know (either in the forums or through Private Message) if you experienced a crash and how many turns you replayed.

Spoiler
:
Spoiler :

If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.
TSG Announcement thread (this one): This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don't be afraid to ask questions). Its also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don't post any game-related info once you open and play the save. Instead use the next thread.
After Actions thread: In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state your victory/loss date (preferably in the post title) and describe your path to glory in this post! Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
Spoiler
:
Spoiler :

We have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note: you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.
This game runs through April 15th 2024.

I might add that the movement expense of the mountain trails is only 1. This seems a bit illogical since hills have 2, but it would be really hard for most units to avoid ending the turn on the mountain if the movement expense were higher than 1.

Good starting location. I will settle in place and probably go scout+monument. I will probably also build an early granary regardless of whether I then aim for military or buildings. My rule of thumb is that as long as there is just one wheat, deer or banana in the vicinity, I prioritize granary. There is nothing quite as disheartening as a slowly growing capital.

Lovely start! Gonna SIP as we have lots of great tiles in the 1st and 2nd circles, and we're on a hill.

Our most important bonus is that we don't need roads except if necessary for troop movements. So we must remember not to automate our workers because otherwise they will build roads, as I learned in last GOTM...

You seem awfully sure that we won’t need roads for the sake of faster movement. Maybe not, on a small continents map.

I agree, nice start! I'm going to need it on Deity, although diplo victory should be easier to achieve than any other type. And hopefully small continents keeps me from getting bum rushed like is happening in GotM 240.

Its such a nice start that I'm not even going to consider moving to settle. We're on a river hill next to cows and wheat with another cow in the 2nd tier; that's 3 great starting tiles right off the bat.

I actually played a few test games. Is it ok to talk about those here? I'll put it in a spoiler just in case.
Spoiler Test games with same settings :
In my test games the starting continent was quite small for 2/3 of them, I had the continent to myself. And the other game it was still smallish but had Atilla on the other side of a narrow isthmus. So I think science is going to be hard to come by in this game; I might go Writing sooner than normal for a library early. Also, I only got a pantheon in 1/3 of the games - but being separated from other civs will mean religion could be more important since the AI may not be able to spread theirs to us easily. I'll definitely go with only one Scout, then Monument, Shrine (I am tempted to skip shrine entirely but probably not).

To be honest I'm not sure at all. but I had a test game in which i was conveniently located on a rather inaccessible penisula, with a mountain range and hills between me and my neighbor.

However sooner or later we will be attacked, maybe even from the sea... but we might be able to delay roads until mid or late game.

@Rhodro you can't build a stone works if the city is settled on a plains tile. Apparently it was some kind of balancing decision, because plains cities typically already have a lot of hammers. Or it's bug, I'm not 100% sure. In Lekmod they changed that, but for this game no stone works for us, in the capital at least.

Edit: I meant to tag @sebtanic

Wow! Didn't know that, thanks.
