TSG33 Game in Progress

Settled in place, only founded one other city near rock of gibraltar with the free settler from liberty. Was going to settle another city on the river/coast north of capital but Suliman beat me to the spot, so rather than settlers I built a couple of archers and serveral warriors to promote to legions, with a view to capturing a couple of sulimans cities.

After getting trapping for the elephants beelined straight to maths, to get hanging gardens, then iron working for legions.

Allied the two city states to the west (was lucky here, barb camp both wanted destroyed, and sold both ivory resources for cash).

Scout got promoted to archer from a ruin, and then found japan. And an unescorted settler (free worker this early? and cripple the japanese).... forgetting that ranged units can't capture units or cities I declared war and then just ended up taking a shot at the settler, who then founded another japanese city. Oops :crazyeye:

Excellent, I have now just truly annoyed one of the civs I really hate fighting against.

Then suliman declared war sending three of four warriors and a spearman, they were repelled without much trouble with what would have been zero losses for me except that a wounded warrior I had moved away from the front line got killed by a shot from a barb galley :(

Settled for peace for some gold, as I wasn't ready to attack yet.

Completed hanging gardens in Rome, then realised stonehenge was still available so built that, then great library (took civil service). Then the Oracle... :)

I think I was lucky in that after I made peace with japan (he gave me gold + 1 GPT just to make my scout/archer go away), he then used his new army to attack england and egypt so they did not have time to build many wonders.

Attacked Suliman with three legions (promoted from warriors) a couple of archers and a ballista, captured the north city on coast easily but then as I was going for istanbul he built the great wall. I was going to leave him one city south of istanbul, but the wall meant that I would have been shot to pieces from that city on the way to the capital so I captured that then instanbul (last city). Bads news is that now all the other civs will not trade :(

Hiawatha did sign a RA with me, but then attacked a couple of turns later... burnt two of his cities to the ground, then sued for peace (gave him some gold and whales from istanbul). I was going to press the attack but knights and longswordmen started appearing, and I still haven't researched steel!

Built chichen itza in capital in time for first GA, then hagia sophia, then Taj Mahal for a another golden age, and during that GA finished Sistine chapel, Himeji castle (and PT with GE from HS, and Notre dame in Antium with liberty GE, just before Antium finished colossus.)

:goodjob:

So now all the world hates my guts for being a warmonger and a wonder *****. And I still haven't researched steel or got one great artist (1 spare GE and 2 scientists), turn 181.

A couple of thoughts that maybe can help for the next game:

Great plan.

Actually, you can capture workers with an archer. You just have to make sure you manually select 'Move' instead of doing a ranged attack. The default is ranged attack and more than once I have forgotten and fired a bunch of arrows at the worker or settler I have intended on capturing!

Then suliman declared war sending three of four warriors and a spearman, they were repelled without much trouble with what would have been zero losses for me except that a wounded warrior I had moved away from the front line got killed by a shot from a barb galley :(

Your declaration on Japan was your one free DoW where the other Civs won't have any warmonger hate against you. Since you intended on going after Sully anyway, you probably shouldn't have accepted a peace deal from him. Whatever he offered in the peace deal wasn't enough compared to all the trades/RAs that it botched for you for the rest of the game.

Thanks Mazer, I thought there was a way of using ranged units to capture workers/settlers but forgot. And I know I declared war on japan then Sully, but had it stuck in my head that the first war (against japan), was an 'accident' and therefore didn't count :crazyeye:

Explains why england, egypt and japan all went to 'Hostile' :)
