At this point there really is no reason to play Ethiopia unless you want an early religion, but that's all thanks to the Stele. A bonus towards larger empires never was any good and is now totally obsolete due to the great expanse.

Serenissima really isn't bad. Sure, you can't build settlers, but this frees up your early game to do other important things. The ability to make purchases in puppets plus having double the trade routes makes Venice unstoppable by the Renaissance.
