Upgrading units

Sorry if this has already been posted, I looked but couldn't find my exact problem.

I know it's probably simple, but if I accidentally skip upgrading a unit (level up from experience), how do I level it up?

click on the unit. it'll still have the options.

Depending on the unit and the upgrade tree, you might have to upgrade in steps or else pay more gold for a bigger jump.

Ok we need to distinguish here between upgrades and promotions.

An upgrade is making a swordsman into a longswordsman after learning Steel and having some cash.

A promotion is granting your swordsman a permanent benefit (shock/drill/medic etc.) from gained experience. Click on the unit again and you will be able to promote him.
