When I try to do something, my terrain color changes to black

I've tried to run Sid Meier's Civilization III through GE-Proton 8.6. When I try to start the game, my terrain color changes to black. I can see everything, but not terrain. Help me please.

It's a known bug with Wine, Civ III has been broken in Wine for many years.

Interestingly, a few people have been picking away at the graphics in that bug thread in the last few months. No official fix yet though, just a bunch of workarounds each with their own drawbacks.
