Minor things :

For some reason I'm fixated on canals.

Would like to see something that emphasizes rivers more. Yes they get a gold boost, but maybe something like reduced road construction time or cost in the early game.

Wouldn't mind seeing more attention paid to ocean tiles.

Bigger things :

Would like to see diplomacy fleshed out more. Currently the only consideration I have with DOW is whether I can take diplo hits. Would like to see trade play a larger factor in the decision making process.

Do miss the UN options from prior versions. Stands out as an area that could get some attention.

Also miss shared victories. Would be nice to work together with an AI on occasion.

And yes, I'd pay for an expansion. They went in a direction I approve of in CiV, and the G&K expansion hit the mark for me as well. I'm at the stage where I'd be disappointed if they didn't release another one.

2K is in the process of making the Civilization series accessible to your average dumb Call of Duty player in order to boost its sales, profits, and name recognition, so while I certainly want an expansion with these features, it seems unlikely to be implemented given the crowd that we're dealing with. It's a step down from the high caliber which used to characterize the series down into the abyss with people who don't have cognition on a higher level than "MOAR KILLZ MORE PRESTIGE!!!!!!:devil::devil::devil::devil:" The dramatic oversimplification of the task of running a civilization to stand the test of time is now the direction of the series. This is evidenced by the infinite city sprawl strategy suddenly becoming the best option in CiV - it requires little thought and only mindless spamming of cities, much like the prime strategy in CoD is mindless infinite bullet sprawl.

Hence I voted that there would be no expansion - only more crappy DLC which could have been easily made by the community given the right tools. Fortunately, many of the ideas listed here appear to be moddable.

For the most part Civ V now includes the basic features Civ IV had in its final version; some differ in scope (such as missing diplo options like map trading, diplo victory but no resolution system, or the inability to establish international trade routes, although trade routes themselves exist). Given that Civ IV took a base game with many of its predecessors' features and then added new elements in the expansions, there's definitely scope for adding all-new elements to Civ V.

Also miss shared victories. Would be nice to work together with an AI on occasion.

I don't even recall shared victories, but I like the idea.

Disease - Disease has shaped Humanity for millenia. But no one wants to play with a system that they can't control or can't influence at all - so make Disease religion-esique.

Plus there are a ton of civs left out :p. Portugal the most famous of the ones still not in.

Good point...essentially the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse....;)

Though I suppose "disease" is inferred with some of the buildings ...eg. hospitals...and maybe with "Unhappiness"... But maybe it could be brought in as some "natural" calamity, along with earthquakes, tornados, etc...as an occasional and, perhaps, terrain related possibility.

And, yes, Portugal  Leader: ...that's easy... Henry the Navigator

And some of the unique items: Fishing Boats would have a greater yield....the Caravel would have more "vision" or "more movement points. Maybe a unique "luxury" ...say, "Cod" which can be obtained from any tile in the world, even outside the civ's boundaries...Missionaries would have more power....I can't think of a unique building though....hmmmm... Monastries??

All the gems in the world will not make you healthy if you cannot access good health care.

Hell no. I do not want another expansion. I want a new game where I can play the board in a 3 dimensional space, and have the ability to move my units in a 3rd person view, that I think would make the game more enjoyable and immersible.

I also like the idea of Army units that can be modified with different units forming into one bad ass mega unit!

I also want corporation back into the game, but a lot better than Civ 4.

I want the ability to have my workers build canals, dams, and many other man-made wonders that can alter any terrain tile.

And finally, remake the diplomacy to what it actually stands for, it is by far the stupidest thing about the game. And get rid of the happiness thingy too.

Bold added for emphasis. The thing that eventually wore me out with prior versions were the tasks. Endless road building, massive armies, and tons of cities. I much prefer the approach of stripping down the tasks.

Leading any large endeavour isn't so much about performing the tasks yourself, its about making the right decisions and ensuring you have the right people on the right task. So I like what they've done in that regard. I think its simplification for the better. By stripping away the minutia it lets you focus on the core of the experience.

I'd frankly like them look at more ways of taking out the tasks. I'd like to say "Send a settler with a warrior and archer to this spot and settle a new city. Or, move all of our bombers to the western front. The Total War series has the logistics bit down better IMO.

With that being said, I do agree they need to carefully add more decision points. G&K added religion and diplomacy. I thought they were well thought out and well implemented. Not as robust as it could have been, but I'd prefer less well implemented features than a ton of poorly designed and implemented features and mechanics.

As for their motivations I don't get too caught up in trying to determine the why of it. What concerns me is the end product and so far so good. If the idea was to strip the game down to its essentials and carefully add complexity as they go, I like it.

So I suppose their next move will be a critical one. If they focus just on new CiVs and scenarios as DLC, I'd be pretty disappointed. But if they continue to carefully add to the base...I'll be happy. A little surprised, but happy.

I would like to see a Space Age expansion. You could add additional leaders for some existing civs, and revamp the science victory to involve something more meaningful then the current build spaceship parts and ship to capital mechanic. Perhaps there could be a scenario where several projects (Sputnik, Gemini, Apollo (luna), Voyager, Mir, ISS, Space Elevator, Manned Mars mission, etc.) eventually culminate in an Alpha Centauri colony.

Probably not though maybe since Gods and Kings did receive decent reception, anyone have real sales numbers, that'll tell.

For people whining about ICS being only strategy, please learn to play. One of the main benefits of Gods and Kings is the viability of tradition as tall empire. Watch Maddjiins Babylon and Maya game, one ICS with great Ics civ other great Tall civ, and the tall civ did far better. Yeah circumstances were not as great in ICS but fully viable deity win with tradition hardly makes ICS the only viable strategy. With diplo actually being possible now staying smaller with higher pops and less border conflict is even better than before. Now that growth is reasonable and tiles actually have worthwhile yeilds being tall is just fine.

I have a vague recollection of broader collaboration with the AI in prior versions. Shared victory does sound overblown.

I'm guessing no. DLC basically fills in the role of an expansion, since with recent Civ games we've two civ expansions, with one having a lot more gameplay changes than the other. IV for example had Warlords (mainly Civs + scenarios, not lots of gameplay tweaks) and then BTS (more substantial gameplay changes/additions, plus some civs and then some scenarios and mods thrown in for the hell of it, even ones Firaxis didn't make). DLC = Warlords basically.

Pretty sure people like you were saying the same things about DLC and all and then they came out with G&K.

If things like maddjinn viewer counts and the increase traffic in the last two months to CFC forums, it shows people still have interest in the game. They also haven't thrown the towel yet on the 2kforums like they have in the past for other titles. Rumor is at least a patch is in the works in the near future, my guess is that it will be preceded or followed shortly by a DLC.

I'd just say this... I'd buy another CiV expansion... I can't see why they wouldn't do it again since I think most people are decently satisfied with G&K and I'm betting an extra wave of people will be once the next steam sale kicks in.

Do you think Firaxis has a bunch of custom built utilities designed for efficiently making DLC? I would guess so, and I hope they would give those away or sell them before they closed shop on Civ 5.

I agree there is too much interest in this game and it will continue to grow. My guess is we will see another patch, a few DLCs, more patches, and a second expansion. The devs are not done yet. They are just very quiet while they work, as usual.

Speaking of MadDjinn I am watching his newest LP right now. :)

I think devs are quiet at the moment because they are heavily invested in their other baby:

X-COM

Once that's done, we'll probably be hearing more on the werks for CiV.

Along the adding disease note, I think it would be funny if you could "found" a disease, sort of like a religion. Except disease would only create negative effects, so you would have to judge which traits would hurt the least. Once your disease is fully evolved, prepare to release it on your enemies!! Would add 3 new people:
Rotting Corpses (like missionaries)
Doctor (like inquisitor)
Pile of Rotting Corpses (like great prophet)

Also would create interesting situations with city-states and other Civs. "Moraco wants Malaria to be the major disease in their city." "Herpes has spread to Edinburgh!"

I am not convinced about another expansion because honestly I can't think of a lot of civs to fill it. While new features are always fun, it is new civs that sells expansions. So speaking of, what new civs would people want in an expansion? I honestly don't care for importance of the civ much, I like unique gameplay. My idea for civs would possibly be...

Zulu ( would probably play as a generic warmonger civ like huns/mongolia, unless they can come up with a good unique stuff, which I hope they could)

Inuits ( Yes I know its hardly a civ, but neither is polynesia and we really don't have a civ to represent the cold tundra areas. Maybe they could get bonus food from tundra within their borders and can pass ice. Or something along those lines.)

Indonesia or New Zealand or something similar to that area. That area needs more representation.

 This certainly could help the AI. If it attacks you while you have the plague.
