Yikes! Steam error: help

hi,

Still having the same problem:
I have a steam account and have also installed steam and am trying to download the demo...

Sometimes, the steam progress bar comes up and says "updating..." but nothing happens even when I wait for a long time.

Sometimes, I get the following error message:
"steam.exe(main exception): to run steam, you must first connect to the internet"
(even though I am connected to the internet).

Any ideas on this?

thanks--for whatever it's worth, i can download now--
the problem was that I was in a library which is a public network

at home, steam download works fine
