Suggestion: AI Navy Utilization

It seems to me that the AI in civ V never uses navies. with a small amount (2-4) of destroyers, 1-2 missle cruisers, 1 aircraft carrier, and maybe a battleship or two, I have the most powerful navy in the game, with the AI usually not building more than two destroyers. Even on harder difficulty levels (king+) I will never see any sort of navy or actually thought out amphibious assault from even the nations that are going for a domination victory.

2K said that they are improving the navy composition with G&K, I just really hope that they also improve the AI so that navies are actually useful outside of an islands map. I want a big, WW2 style Battle of the Atlantic/Pacific, so that even getting troops to the enemy's shores should be a challenge in of itself, not a goto route.

One thing at a time - I'd like to see land halfway competent.

haha. Yes, I've been outgunned and outnumbered but won land battles due to the AI being stupid. obviously the AI needs major improvement in general, but I'm just hoping that they don't forget about fixing naval "combat".

Haha yes the land AI may be incompetent, but at least it exists. I have never, ever had a serious naval battle with the AI (meaning something more than my scouting trireme bumping into an enemy boat by accident during a war). All this naval reworking will come to nothing if the AI still doesn't ever build a serious navy. That said, if the AI really does fight for naval supremacy, this expansion could be a lot of fun. :)

Do aircraft carrier-spammed atomic bombs count? Rome and Greece build quite a bunch of them in my Continents games, with destroyers, sometimes battleships and some subs. Why, there was once where I took the Roman capital near the coast, and all of a sudden from the north came a Roman atomic bomb and I lost one Modern Armor completely. Turns out he still had a hefty sized force of 3 atomic bombs (and some empty carriers tugging along) and some destroyers milling about too.

Also, depending on mismatched tech levels, it is possible for one runaway AI on another continent to come and steam roll someone else on your own continent. It doesn't happen often enough. I agree that this sort of stunts should be pulled off with more frequency and panache, but to say that the AI doesn't try is a bit mistaken.

e: When I mean panache, I mean "just as I'm ripping his continent a new one, Augustus decides that the best way to spend his surviving navalized atomic arsenal is to rush them towards my continent and throw in the nuke spam"

That's interesting. I play continents on King level, but I've never seen even so much as an enemy carrier. Perhaps the way that navy buildup is triggered is coded in such a way that it can only happen very rarely.

If they don't bump up the level of the naval AI an awful lot then there are going to be problems.

Being able to capture coastal cities with 'melee' ships is going to be dreadfully easy if the AI isn't managing a fleet properly.

Those mechanics are going to be very bad additions to the game if the AI can't keep up with them.

I'd love to see the AI escort its amphibious troops, that would be a huge plus by itself. With new naval stacking the AI should be better. At least it can supposedly organize a sea invasion in 10 turns instead of 60 turns in G&K. I also hope it learned how to use carriers and aircraft better, or even use them period.
