The Hall of Fame Team would like to welcome new players, and welcome back old vets, to the Fifthteenth running of the Civfanatics Civ IV Hall of Fame Challenge Series.

HOF Challenge XIV was a successful and competitive installment of the series, won by Pollina. HOF Challenge XV is a collection of 10 games with a time limit of 6 months to complete them (from the 15th December 2014 to 15th May 2014). The games are designed to (hopefully) be more defined than the usual gauntlet games and challenging in a different way than a general Hall of Fame game, yet far from impossible to complete.

The winner will be the person who finishes the most games and collects the most points along the way (10 for 1st in each individual game, down to 1 for 10th). Progress results for all games can be found here. There are individual threads for each game in the Challenge Series forum so head on over and check it out.

For those unfamiliar with the CFC Hall of Fame (HOF), we encourage you to try the challenge as a way of introducing yourself to the HOF. The Challenge series is just one feature of the HOF. A Gauntlet series of games is run monthly. In addition you can simply submit any of your games to the HOF. All valid games are recorded to a database and ranked under various categories. The HOF enables you to compare your progress against other HOFers over all time or simply track your own progress. In other words, the HOF is as competitive as you want it to be.

In addition, the CFC HOF offers two ongoing challenge/achievements called the Quatromasters and Elite Quatromasters which can be found here. All valid game submissions to the HOF apply toward your progress of these long-term achievements. Are you up for the challenge! :)

All of the games need to be played using version 3 of the BUFFY mod (BUFFY-3.19.003), found here. Standard Hall of Fame Rules apply to all games.

A quick question as I'm not too familiar with HoF... Is there any chance of being at all competitive without Mapfinder?

I don't mind manually re-rolling until I get something fairly tasty, but I just find using Mapfinder quite annoying...

You don't need Mapfinder or a "Mapfinder start" to be competitive. "Fairly tasty" is usually good enough, if it suits your play style. Choosing the right settings (map settings, opponents, game settings) is often much more important.

I honestly rarely use Mapfinder anymore except for very special starts. I just create a "template" save and use it to regenerate maps until I get "fairly tasty" starts and then save them off. (A "template" save being the initial save with the correct settings you need. As long as you take no action in that save you can reuse it to regenerate more starts)

MF can be useful if you get it setup to work. You don't need many rules at all. For instance, if you want stone, just put stone in as a rule. It doesn't need to be more complicated than that. Then let it run when you are away.

Still, oftentimes I want to get starts to play immediately, so I roll my own.

It also depends on your game plan. For some Hatsheput games I've been playing recently, I desperately want horses in the capital and Mapfinder doesn't help with that, so manually generating until I got something decent and then playing until AH was the best option.

With the level of participations these days, I think you have pretty good chance to get a high level rank without Mapfinder. If one knows how to micromanage and make good grand decisions, that person will certainly beat the one abusing Mapfinder.

I don't understand the annoyance you got with Mapfinder. Mapfinder install is very easy, creating Rule-sets is also very easy, and once you've set up that program, it can run and create starts during the night. Next morning you wake up, and got 2h more to play, because you don't need to re-generate manually, and you'll have 20 multiple Gold / Gems starts.

Like said though, of course you can be competetive with just normal re-rolling. Most of my games also only have 1 Gold in the BFC of the capital. Without any commerce, I doubt you'll be able to win, so re-roll until you at least got 2 Food + 1 Gold or more.

Many of my really good starts I got manually, but Mapfinder is still a good tool.

A quick warning in case any other HoF newbies decide to have a go at this.

Make sure to read how the winner is decided before you play! (e.g. earliest finish date / score).

I just played out a 1330AD culture win for Game 3 that I was quite happy with until I realized the winner is determined by score... Doh!

One of the challenges is on Deity and has competetive settings, the reason why I'm also gonna play it!

Come on, show the world that HoF-players are n00bs by beating them :> .
