Did you ever think about making ships unupgradable. I never heard that in real history galleys from ancient era were upgraded to Galeons or later to transportships. Normally ships are wrecked off if they are out of date.

Normally i am playing on snail speed. There the research rate is often too fast - or let me say the later techs are too cheap. Once i have several well built cities i flow through the tech-tree and reach industrial or modern era at 500 or 1000AD. I would make later techs more expansive and not...

Well, maybe that's the reason. I set them down because it made my game faster and led to less ctd. Although my hardware should be able to manage large games: Intel Core i7 860, Radeon HD5770, 8GB DDR3 and Win7 64 Bit i had bad memory allocations in late games on high-res.
