Tech tree: which is the earliest discovery you aim for?

Watch my latest lp on youtube, I discover Robotics before 1AD! Usually I go something like this: 1. Republic or Democracy or (Masonry and Trade), need better government 2. Trade, need trade routes and marketplaces 3. Religion, mostly if I'm on a big continent (JS Bach's Cathedral) 4. Theory of...

    What government is the best?

Democracy is always the best, and then keep expanding. Grow your cities to size 3, and then increase your luxuries for a few turns, that's the easiest way to grow cities. Growing your cities with food takes way too long time.

    Spontaneous civil uproar!

I've seen this plenty of times, in fact it happened on my latest lp on youtube, I suddenly got a city from the Zulus. Once I built a big empire on Eurasia/Africa on earth, then I built a city on Madagaskar. Then I let barbarians capture all of my developed cities, even some wonders. That was...

    Diplomats

I think a diagonal square is 1.5 squares. That's true at least in some rules in Civ 1 or 2, or maybe it's a common rule.

    Finally won on Emperor level

Watch my latest uploaded video on youtube, I finally researched Robotics and lots of other technology before 1AD on emperor+2, two steps above emperor! I had a lucky start finding an advanced tribe on my first turn, and some other auspicious things happened, but still, that's Robotics before 1AD.

    What a great game

    My sentiments exactly.

More developed version of Civ 1

Thanks for mentioning my blog. I've been trying to make good AI and I had a plan that I should basically study how the brain works and then go from there. This was very hard to do and I'm not quite sure how to proceed. Also I've been busy looking for a job lately, looking for a half time job is...

You Are An Evil Tribe... Who Me? What???

I used to pay tribute to Stalin in this one game I played, but he would always sneak attack, even if I always payed him. Whenever I want a peaceful game I usually either play on Earth as the Aztecs or Americans and restart if the Aztecs appear, or I replay an old save file where I know I'm...

    What a great game

You articulate my sentiments exactly sir! Penalties! That's a nice way to put it. The way I see it is that first it starts with Civ 1 of course, and then they look at how people play Civ 1 and for some reason they decide that they don't like it, so they try to penalize the players in order to...

How can I make the following hack?

Wow, do you mean you want to play for an additional 1000 turns? Since it's one year per turn? Wouldn't you pawn those AI civs by then, I mean the AI is weak and usually can't really fight back after the snowball of conquering starts rolling down hill. Maybe I should start working on my...

From Chieftain to Emperor - my little CIV1 Game-Log

I think the AI gets more aggressive around 2000bc too, up until approximately that date the AI wont attack and will always offer peace. I usually play on emperor or emperor +1 or +2, a difficulty level that can be obtained by hacking the save file with a hex editor. The easiest way to play Civ...

    Weird pollution bug?

I think you're more likely to get pollution the more tech you have, that's the basic assumption I always assumed.

    Enduring appeal of Civ1

I think people like turn based strategy in general and Civ 1 simply happens to be one of the best out there. Less is more, even if I found a phalanx defeating a bomber unrealistic, I find a library defeating a rifleman by somehow establishing a "culture force field" even more unrealistic. I've...

    Caravans and railoads

I'm not sure, but I think the problem is that the games pathfinding sometimes enters a loop. Instead of finding a path once and then following it, each time the unit has moved to a new square the game reevaluates the path and sometimes it ends up going in a loop. In order to make sure that the...

    Keeping forests alive.

I think chops are always more than 5 hammers per turn, you have to plan the movements of your workers carefully in order to avoid taking unnecessary extra steps. I didn't know Mathematics increased the number of hammers you get, my forests are usually gone by then
