They fitted modern fire control systems, radars and removed some of the large gun turrets to install Tomahawk cruise missile batteries to the Iowa's in the 80s because Reagan didn't want to give up his toys (they were going to scrap them otherwise). They made the ships even more deadly than they already were - however, even then, they couldn't really compete with dedicated missile cruisers as far as ship to ship lethality. Though they did retain some of the big guns which saw limited use against Iraqi coastal targets in the Gulf War. Then after the war they scrapped them.
