    Universities..

universities are expensive i give cities a library if they're producing 10 or more beakers (regardless of scientific or not) universities, 20+ beakers (if not scientific) this is just a rule of thumb i use, it works quite well and keeps maintenance costs down scientific, yes, i'll build them...

    Universities..

if you are scientific, then your best 9 cities (core cities) get them unless they have terrible shield production of course. but if that's the case, they are probably harbour cities with lots of commerce and beakers, and you can cash rush one.... if you are not scientific, then your capital...

    that awkward moment when...

that is the definition of awkward if i don't have iron or horses (rare), then i build archers and catapults. once you get to invention, longbowmen backed up with a couple of spears and 20 trebuchets will take a good few cities if you have iron, you are fine. swordsmen, then medieval...

    Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

if i get an early leader, i'd rather save it for later, or rush it for the great library if i have literature i never build the pyramids. not particularly interested in capturing them either i've gone entire games without building a single granary, and won, whether it's space, domination etc...

    Horsemen???

the problem with attacking with cavalry in the industrial age is that they have no chance against rifles and infantry fortified in cities and metros they will only win if the defending unit is red-lined, but the problem with that is that cavalry move 3, infantry and artillery move 1 you are...

    Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

yes, ctrl + x will order all units of the same time to attack the target (or move, if you're using a stack of workers) don't use it though, always attack one unit a time if you're taking heavy losses, then you can't undo them and if you take the city, you use up a movement point for a lot of...

What do you find to be the best unit?

good argument for infantry. best all round unit i reckon for me, tanks are unstoppable unless you're against infantry in metros. need armies for those medieval infantry (longbowmen as well, but you'll need some spears with them) combined with trebuchets will take down spears, pikes and muskets...

    Horsemen???

don't quite agree artillery is better grouped with infantry. nothing is beating that defense, especially fortified on a hill or mountain while you bombard away cavalry's strength is that 3 speed no, it isn't that 6 attack, because they will struggle with muskets and get decimated by...

    Problem with mines

good points if the civ i'm playing as has a horse UU, then i will get horses, hold off attacking, get markets, harbours and libraries down, then attack with chivalry otherwise i'd prefer swords. the simple fact is that one on one, on flat ground, a swordsman will win 66% of the time against a...

    Maximun number of Units

i've never come close to that number most units i've had was 150 or something

    Problem with mines

this is a good reason. sooner you have horses or iron hooked up, the sooner you can ditch the archers lux also, especially if you're playing regent or higher. you really need that first luxury to fight disorder still, i'd use at least 3 workers for it. especially gems in mountains

    AI sucks

ai plays on a turn by turn basis. it recalculates everything each turn, so it doesn't do 'strategy' this is why simply taking 1hp off a unit will make the AI retreat it all the way back to its borders or why moving a unit a few squares can deter an potential AI attack or why a stack of doom...

How do I deal with overpopulation?

how far apart are your cities? if they are 4-5 spaces apart, then you are going to have problems with population later on, and also pollution caused by over population no point having a size 30 city if it's not working most of the tiles for most of the game, and those that it does work aren't...

    Problem with mines

he covered the reason why above but don't mine hills or mountains in despotism. takes too long and wastes worker turns road them only if it's absolutely necessary wait until you're into republic and have your main cities roaded and irrigated/mined leave the hills and mountains for last

    Scientific Research- Income balance

problem i have with switching is that unless your towns are size 7 and cities, that unit support will eat away and i have at least 1 attacker per town and 1.5-2 workers per town there's no way the 1 unit cost per town under republic is gonna cover that problem is, if you wait for your towns...
