That's interesting. So if you travel across a large continent, capture a capital (or two) and then send a lonely worker on a long journey to hook up those capitals to your capital via one long road, you're really only out the cost of the worker's time.
I tried this once and it told me that I could not remove the road because it was not within my cultural borders. So that road had to just sit out in the open. I never paid attention to see if I was getting charged for it or not..
I, too, have found that the tile improvements have not been useful. It's pretty much either free tech from GS, use the GG combat bonus, build a wonder with the GE or just use the golden age function.

Seriously, destroyers/battleships need a Ram command for wooden ships. Then when you're done, have a (R)epaint command so you can touch up the scratches your battleship got when you sank the trireme.
Can you have different units on a carrier? I ask because last night I had my atomic bomb-loaded carrier running around the sea, and I built a normal bomber to add to the carrier but it would not load no matter what I did.
