When you say fog, do you mean areas where you can't see what is going on? Or do you mean the blackness of areas which haven't been explored?

What kind of odds are being listed before you attack? Grenadiers have a bonus against gunpowder units, but that won't help you if he's fielding archers or infantry. If his cities are built on a hill he gets a defensive bonus as well. Make sure you aren't attacking across a river.
