FRANCE

President Mac-Mahon of the Conservative party had done the impossible. He managed to get Parliament to work together, and also scored a few seats for the Conservative party. By the end of the second year of his Presidency, when Parliament could call an election at any time, the Conservatives had managed to gain enough seats that the 55% majority could not be reached for the National Liberals to call an election. Parliament was only 51% NatLib, who were close to losing the majority that they enjoyed since 1877. The Conservative Party only had 43% though. By 1883, when the president was at two years in office, problems began to arise in Spain. The Basque Rebellion had not been put out peacefully like he had hoped. However, he did manage to avoid large scale war.
The Liberty Acts of 1874 gave Spain, Italy and the Lowlands self governance, for their loyal service during the Canadian War, but they were constitutionally still part of the French Republic, and any military they raised was still part of the Grande Armee. This helped keep Mac-Mahon in power, since other parts of the Union wanted to military intervene to stop the Basques, but war was still unpopular in France. However, he had many successes domestically. The French Government was once again brought to maximum efficiency, and the near elimination of corruption kept Mac-Mahon moderately popular.
This was not his only success. The French Economy has seen a huge boom, and new industries were popping up everywhere. Many cities had managed to grow to new heights, and Paris was contemplating hosting a Worlds Fair. The growth did not come without hardship for some. The island of Sicily saw much damage to its core infrastructure by the Volcano. 20 million francs was quickly released by Parliament to help aid the Italian government in cleaning up the mess, though. All in all, Mr Mac-Mahon is still a moderately popular leader, however, if he hopes to keep his job, something must be done about the Basque rebellion, and quickly!

Recent events have shown the world how uneducated the populace is. Parliament noticed this, and in 1885, a new law was written. Every man, woman, and child living within the Republic, has the right to education. The state must provide for them if they cannot afford private lessons. Every person must remain in school until the age of 16, however, poorer students that manage to graduate with good grades will have all college expenses covered by the government. The new law aims to bring a new golden age to French thinking, and hopefully encourage more intellectuals to stay in France, with Parliaments notice that most of the greatest discoveries of the last 60-70 year have been from French born inventors and scientists, who moved elsewhere to find the tools they needed to work.

Many things have been invested in over the last few years. However, there is one key part of the Republic that has fallen behind. The Military, consisting of the Grande Armee and the Republican Navy, are both equipped with old and outdated equipment. Parliament has instituted a goal to modernize the military within 8 years. Hopefully they will be able to achieve it.
Parliament has also decided to send aid to Canada in the amount of 20 million francs, as part of a policy to help strengthen allies. Since France is obligated to protect the sovereignty of Canada, parliament decided that it would be best if Canada was given some help to protect themselves.
