SGOTM 16 - U'nu'sual S'us'pec'ts

I think we are over estimating Brennus a bit too much. I don't think there is any way he can retaliate fast enough if we took Bibcarte in the first 2-3 turns of the war.

If we are not going to use Trebs to start the war and take his core cities, why do we need to research Eng? :) Surely we could trade for it since it's a high priority tech for the AI.

This is actually a pretty good point. We could then focus on getting all the pre-req techs needed to bulb ... Radio? Bio? Future Tech 1?

I mean the reason for Engineering I assumed was that we were starting the war with trebs, but if that is not the case, we should just skip it! However, we do want Notre Dame...hmm...It's a crucial wonder imo in a sushi game but I don't think it's that crucial that we won't be able to beat an AI to it! Assuming they are willing to trade.

After CS, we could go Paper -> Education, and bang Oxford out.

But I still like Engineering first actually, none of the AI even have Machinery yet (I wrongly thought Qin did).

Just because we don't start the war with trebs, doesn't mean we won't finish it with trebs.

It also speeds up reinforcements, with 3 road movement.

edit: GS for Education, otherwise an Academy for Commerce. I think I lean towards Edu.

Brennus has to have 30-40 units floating around somewhere, it brennus afterall, as we are 2 turns from Bibracte after DoW, that gives him a lot of time to reinforce considering his road network.

Any troops that don't arrive in time to defend will surely hit our weakened stack. I don't want to be paranoid, but holding Bibracte is essential. If we lose it (along with our mini stack) then we are screwed, as our SoD won't quite be a SoD considering we reduced it 10 units to take Bibracte.

If we are going to pursue a Galleon backstab (which I think is a good idea), then we have to make sure it works, otherwise it is just a huge waste of hammers.

This is my concern. If we DoW, land troops, take 1 turn to get to Bib, 2-3 turns to bombard walls down, and he even has 10 troops (never mind 20-30), that he hustles back to Bib, it will be a waste and it diverts resources from the main stack.

If we are unable to get Rams and Brens fighting, that leaves his main stack for us deal with. The idea of getting the two back to war, is that Brens main stack gets tied up with Rams.

So at a minimum, during troop build up, we MUST find his stack. And if it is large and in Bib, rethink the naval assault.

Hmmm - Good question. Base commerce in Paris is 53, Commerce 47 and growing quickly. An academy in Commerce pretty much brings it on par with Paris from a tech perspective and with lots more upside. How many beakers will the GS give us on a Educ bulb? My gut tells me go with the bulb but would like to understand how many research turns it saves us.

In terms of Eng ahead of Paper->Educ. Assuming we go straight for Rams after Brens it makes sense to me. If we are going to wait and build back up, I would opt for Paper->Educ and hope to trade for Eng.

Yes, it would be nice to explore to his south and west.

I don't think we will be able to bribe Brennus into war with Ramesses. We wouldn't take MC & Monarchy and all our gold.

There is great benefit of attacking several cities at once, but we need to be careful about it.

Bibracte is currently garisoned by 3 very poor troops. I think if we take 11 (3 galleons & galley), we will be OK. Maybe less Cats and more X-Bows/Maces though. edit: these cats won't be bombarding, just suiciding

I think once our stacks are rolling, there is no point slowing down, just take the whole continent.

There's a small fix I need to apply to your save.

It looks as if you are currently between turnsets. Would you guys have any problem if I ask you to hold off playing your next turnset until my next post in an hour or two; then download your latest save again before playing?

I assure you the fix will not affect any of your existing plans.

That'd be fine.

Got that: NOBODY touch the save until we hear from AlanH

Thanks. I have done the fix. Carry on, but PLEASE make sure you download the latest save from the server before playing any more turns. It's at the following URL:

Thanks Alan!

PS. You should see Humbaba is back to his old self again now :)

Oh dear.

Sorry I have been AWOL the last few days, a bunch of RL stuff came up and I was swamped at work. I should have time to catch up tonight. In the meantime if somebody wants to check out the new and improved Humbaba and post a screenshot... ;)

Humbaba is a Mech Infantry warlord with leadership, medic 3 and city defense 3.

Oh darn... AlanH apparently thought the invisibility spell I cast on him was a bit "over the top".:(

Oh well... too much evil is a vice, I suppose. :hide:

Oh, so he is supposed to be in Humbaba's Haven!

Well, at least that is cleared up, I was thinking he was a battleship or something.

So how many paratroopers do we need to kill at CG3, Medic 3, Mech Inf??

... and by then, those archers will probably be longbows.

One of you test-lovers go see how much culture we need our city to have to flip that city. Is it possible to flip a barb city that far away with just one terrible city?
