The Spirit of Man II - Brave New World

The Kingdom of Jerusalem would like an invite considering it is a power with claims in Africa (Ethiopia and Sinai)

EDIT: Better question why don't I have an automatic invite? And who are these six african colonial powers and why do they matter now that we're starting a new IOT?

We of Egypt consider the Birmingham Trade League's claiment that they are the masters of Egypt as criminal. We suggest the Birmingham Trade League redeem themselves and reconise us as a free nation.

As a anti-imperial nation we will boycott this conference.

Since I've already said it all on Chat and don't want to explain it to everyone individually

This is not a fresh Start IOT
The Harsh reality of 19th century Africa was that the locals weren't automatically invited to the Berlin Conference
In fact by adding the ability for more people to be invited this conference becomes several times more liberal than the Berlin Conference
Colonialism was always a game for those few powerful Europeans.
Now I'm not saying that this is the most realistic IOT out there. Neither am I saying that it doesn't find its roots in the real 19th century.
Therefore we have sweeping colonial conferences to determine the fate of Africa.
Maybe it isn't the nicest way of doing it.
But it simulates the way that it actually happened and how it would happen in this situation.

Oman has received an invitation from the CSA

How grateful Egypt is, to disown the nation which protected it from the red menace to the best of its ability. If it wasn't for them, you would be speaking with God instead of his servant.

Since this is not a fresh start IOT does that mean that some nations start out with more power than others? Or are we at least on an equal playing field there?

It's going to be somewhat but not ridiculously imbalanced at the start, but things will even out a bit due to it being easier to expand outside of Europe.

Care to expand on that Robert? Because right now it looks like the only chance i have of playing a fun game is taking over the NPC Birmingham.

Province count does not equal power.

Balance is going to be achieved through higher IC for smaller nations, easier expansion for those outside of Europe, colonial revolt risk and the nation specific traits.

You certainly won't be at a great disadvantage to start as a nation that wasn't a world power during the last game. You may not all be starting on a completely equal footing but over the first few turns it will balance out. Just because it isn't Fresh Start doesn't mean that Mosher's nation will be any more Powerful that Joan's in the long run and certainly not any more enjoyable to play although I suppose that determines what you think of as enjoyable - obviously for some of us its building the stories and world surrounding the game, its seeing our empires rise and fall and really that's the reason that the majority of events and excitement and interest of playing this game are handed out in roleplay events and bonuses. The game gives back to you for all you give it. This isn't a style of game like the old numbered IOTs or the Risks but like the I&Bs, the Valkyries and the MP world games.

So I suppose it depends what you determine as a fun game, one where everyone is equal starting or one with a more situation and RP focused attitude. Because one just sounds a lot like a risk game to me and that doesn't really make the sort of fun that I get out of IOTs, the other sounds like a story, like a world being built and played out in front of your eyes where you don't have full control and the fickle winds of fate can blow with or against you not just on the role of the die but on the interactions of players and the story that builds up around those interactions. Its your choice, and if you want to quit I won't resent you a mite for it.

Just so long as there aren't a few players who can just go and stomp on everyone I'm fine.

EDIT: By expansion outside of Europe I assume that means war since you said every province would be controlled by someone. Right?

Nation Name: People's Republic of the Caribbean
Capital: Port Au-Prince
Government: One-Party Socialist State
History: The wellspring of fervent revolt that lead to the creation of the new CSA also led to the creation of the PRC. Haiti, the most successful slave revolt in history, had been left with a large free black population still in resistance against many of the colonial powers of the time. However, Haiti had earned its freedom with blood and fire. However, the economy took a turn for the worst and the Martians invaded. The Caribbean had largely been spared the wrath of the Martians, but it wasn't spared the revolutions that wracked North America. The People's Liberation Army of Haiti valiantly liberated Haiti from corrupt governorship and rapidly exported the revolution across the Caribbean to the West Indies and Cuba.

But unlike their neighbor to the north, the PRC doesn't believe in socialism in one state. The people's revolution must expand.

Social and Economic Policies: Harsh social and economic policies that were geared toward the rapid industrialization of the Caribbean to turn it into a modern industrial state. Socially, the country enforces conformity and unity, suppressing dissent with its pervasive secret police.
Internal Politics: There are still sore feelings between the predominately black population and the former influential minority white population. Some whites still resist cooperation with the government. The government's clampdown on religion, including native religions and twists on Christianity, has also resulted in grumbling along some of the lower class. On the front, the Caribbean People's Congress reflects unity and consensus. In the backroom, there are many disagreements. Corruption is a recent concern as well.

Meanwhile, an influential faction in the party is making calls to export the revolution back "home" to Africa and into Europe. There is another faction demanding the state focus at home first, allying with the CSA and to export the religion at home. Both factions contain their white adherents, but both disagree on the next step. Right now, these two factions and a slew of other minor factions make up the backroom scene. The leader of the country is in between the two major camps.

Traits: The Army of the Founders of the Caribbean Revolution (AFCR, or "After" as many say). The AFCR is the pervasive intelligence agency of the PRC. After has become extremely proficient in rooting out unorthodoxy in the ranks and maintaining unity and exporting "the revolution" to foreign lands of the oppressed peoples of the world.

Claims: Cuba, Haiti, West Indies (Jamaica)

The Birmingham Conference of 1905

*snip*

We'll be taking parts of Africa whether or not you agree to recongnize Wallachian claims to the continent; for the sake of doing things nicely & without a war, we suggest you 'invite' the Kingdom of Wallachia to the Conference. In fact, if we are not invited, we shall do everything in our power to protect Egypt from the predations of Birmingham.

The Antipope invites Wallachia to the Conference.

The Antipope vetoes the invitation of Wallachia to the Conference.

Iceland votes that we throw out all dejure claims to Africa and instead divide it equally amongst imperial European nations.

lolnop

By the way, I'm going to be an obstructionist because my current Antipope is a dickhead.

Considering the Antipope couldn't hold onto its African colonies in the first place, why does it deserve its claim to it?

Because my predecessor killed more Martians than Iceland.

Wallachia killed more Martians than anyone else-by quite a wide margin, we must add- so if you're using that as a determinant, we deserve to be in the conference more than the Antipope does.

You killed nine more than we did and seven more than Germany - that year. Considering most hard records after that year have been lost, I would estimate that you only remained slightly ahead of us in Europe and far behind us in other areas, considering you weren't in any.

We defended our colonies as best we could. Did you defend them? No.

And your defense was insufficient

If you cannot defend your lands than you do not deserve them.
