Classic GOTM 32 Spoiler 1: End of ancient age

This is the first time I actually contributed to a GOTM. I wrote it as a diary in real time. Hope that is OK...

[[x]] THE ANCIENT AZTEC CHRONICLES [[x]]

-= Chapter 1: THE DAWN OF CIVILISATION =-

The Aztecs settled at the centre of the universe - our home! We are surrounded by rivers; it is a natural barricade against the threat of barbarian hordes.

AGE OF JAGUAR

Domestic planners thought the land looked good in most directions, but preferred the promise of the nearby watery river regions for defensive value and free aquaducts. Work began on building settlers. Sadly, our culture didn't hold the farming types in high regard: Why be a labourer when you can be the stuff of legend?

Our people hadn't met another race, but they believed they were excellent scouts and began to seek answers at the edge of our world. The greatest soldiers were dispatched to seek enlightenment in the five corners of the universe.

Soon after founding a second city, news of far away civilisations desended on the curious Aztec folk. There was one to the north, and another to the south - what they called themselves mattered not, the fact that these people dared to exist in our universe was sufficient to introduce fear into our domestic spheres.

-= Chapter 2: A GOLDEN AGE =-

PILLAGING WARZ

There was no reason. Primitive peoples don't need a reason. It just seemed like a good idea at the time.

The warlike Aztec peoples declared war on both rival civilizations, and it would serve to stunt their growths. Despite being heavilly outnumbered and unable to capture cities, the Aztec Jaguars wreaked terrible havok through pillaging farmland and capturing foreign women. Once exhausted in pleasure, our proud warrior race sued for peace and acquired enlightenment in exchange their benevolence.

AZTEC DARK AGES (circa 1500 BC)

It wasn't long before the wonderous fables from war away places ceased to be sold in our two cities; life slowed down. Our cities grew slowly, new ideas would take 40 turns to be realised, and our elite Jaguars dwindled in numbers. Much of the old-school army, plus two captured workers, were lost to lone conscript Saxons who were found dwelling in that the region of jungle to our west.

The Aztec army now includes new fangled Archers and Spearmen. Being much like their rivals, the Aztec people lost confidence and began to live in the past.

TROUBLED JUNGLE (circa 1000 BC)

Expansion wasn't going as planned, but it was guessed that the universe must include a land bridge to the north because a member of the Iroquoi tribe appeared on the other side of our world without explanation.

As for the western lands of sticky jungle, riddled with barbarian tribes, it is said that any Aztec who enters shall not return. This is certainly true for the last brave soldiers who went that way. Domestic planners have decided to block off access with thick city walls. Another settler shall be required.

AZTEC IRON AGE (850BC)

Suddenly it dawned on the dim witted Aztecs. They had learned the secrets of Iron from their southern neighbours long ago, but knew not where to find the material! We sought frantically and discovered a source, but it was no easy task as the chonicles clearly show!!

*This was a problem with the GOTM resources*

MONARCHY (710BC)

After many years of knowing nothing, the enlightened Aztecs discovered Monarchy and immediately switched government. This, it was hoped, would give them an edge over the pesky Americans.

ORACLE OF TEOTIHUACAN (610BC)

The Aztec mystics decided long ago to dedicate the second city to building a Wonder and they have finally achieved that objective. Teotihuacan will now join the other cities in building armies of settlers.

GREAT AMERICAN TRADE (510BC)

Although a poor deal for the Aztecs, it marks a new level of awareness for their glorious civilisation. The Aztecs are now familiar with most of their continent and realise for the first time that there is no shortage of land.

MISSED OPORTUNITY (290BC)

Secrecy shrowds the offices of Tenochtitlan where they have discovered the true defenses of Washington DC. Just two spearmen! The Aztec eyes narrow, and the order is given to build a bigger army. Our Military advisor thinks the enemy has a much larger army so there will be no attack today.

American aggression begins circa 90BC. It starts with idle threats but these changes do not bode well for those in favour of peace. Meanwhile, Aztec settlers continue to claim new lands in the north for their glorious empire.

-= Chapter 3: AGE OF CHAOS =-

AZTEC-BARBARIAN WAR (30AD)

News arrives in 30AD of a massive Barbarian horde that has destroyed the western defences. Our Aztec armies are suddenly overstretched and certain to suffer worse defeats. Wealth is also slipping and technology investment reduced to 90%.

AZTEC-AMERICAN DIPLOMATIC CONFERENCE (70AD)

Most of the Aztec forces have been redeployed on our weakened western border. Diplomacy with the primitive Americans is essential if we are to disuade them from taking advantage of our current troubles. Trade and Rights of Passage have been agreed.

INCREASED MILITARY SPENDING (110AD)

Aztec culture on the southern border is expanding and expected to upset the Americans, so wealth is being invested to hurry the development of a new local military. National wealth had dropped significantly over the last century and becoming a concern.

AZTEC-IROQUOI WAR (150AD - 270AD)

This was a terrible political blunder of ours but enlightened peoples are entitled to honest mistakes. Our Jaguar scout came across an unguarded city of the Iroquoi, and thought it would be a good idea to keep their seats warm. This poor judgement has put our own unprotected northern cities at risk of reprisal attacks. More wealth must now be spent to rebuild the northern armies!!

AZTEC-AMERICAN WAR (170AD - 320AD)

Imbiciles in Washington DC have sent Swordsmen into our territory looking for trouble! It can come as no surprise that the peaceful and enlightened Aztecs feel it a bitter blow in discovering that their southern counterparts are as barbaric as the disorganised western invaders; neither are to be trusted! Science spending has been reduced to 0%.

Our affiliation with these war mongers has damaged future international relations. They have become a thorn in our side.

GREAT LIBRARY OF TENOCHTITLAN (190AD)

This marks a new strategy for the Aztec peoples. They will embrace the ocean and seek to learn from the newer and smarter civilisation of Mermaids! Interest in a Great Lighthouse has increased but the need for more troops continues to interfere with domestic planning.

ACQUISITION OF MIAMI, NEW ORLEANS, & BALTIMORE (320AD)

Foolish Americans had by 270AD twice failed to capture the strategic region of Calixtahuaca in the south of our glorious empire. Our hurried spearmen and city walls have held out.

In order to win a better deal in the peace treaty it was decided that our armies should cripple the slightly larger American nation through a strategic offensive..

Primary Objective: Four units of Swordsmen will cross the mountains to Miama and take control of American spices - Success!! We captured Miami with zero casualties.

Secondary Objective: Jaguars will destroy the supply line to the massive (size: 10) American city of Atlanta, causing riots and crippling production - Failure: We destoyed half the roads before our Jaguars were repelled.

The Aztec Empire has acquired Baltimore and New Orleans as part of the peace treaty with America. We are not sure where these places are or whether or not we want them, but this amiable treaty will reduce American power for generations to come.

-= Chapter 4: AGE OF FABLE =-

START OF THE AZTEC COLLONIAL ERA (320AD - ?)

Seeing that the Americans no longer control any spices, it has become a priority to secure any remaining sources for that luxury. Boats and settlers are being dispatched to that end. Science investigation has been increased again - the Great Library has failed us.

DEPRESSION (360AD - ?)

Although the continent is fairly peaceful, the economy is not well. Civil engineers recognise a distinct lack of roads in northern regions which are suffering from lacklustre trade. The Aztecs are fairly poor with a little over 200 Gold, have failed to build the Great Lighthouse, many cities are without improvements, and the empire still possesses an overstreched military.

There has been a Rights of Passage agreement with the distrustful Americans from which the Aztecs gain a measly sum of 24 Gold.

ENTER THE MIDDLE AGES (380AD)

The wise Aztecs have traded a technology with the blood-thirsty Americans, making our civilisation the first on this continent to enter the Middle Ages. Sadly, scientific understanding is now creeping along at a slow pace.

EXCESSIVELY CAUTIOUS WASTE (410AD)

Despicable American swordsmen have marched into our Tamiun territory without explanation, and we fear the evil ones are plotting a sneak attack! Soldiers have been hurried in the north to disuade an Iroquoi reaction. There is great concern for the poorly garrissoned regions of Tamiun and New Orleans in the south. Science spending has been reduced to 80%.

A further 79 Gold was spent hurrying an extra Spearman at Tamiun though we fear the dividends may arrive too late. The Americans marched past

NAVAL EXPEDITION (450AD - 480AD)

An Aztec boat explores the far west. This expedition completes our geographic understanding and coastal outline of the continent.

Current Score: 451 (aka puny)

As you can see, no matter how hard I looked, my people could not find any Iron and any Horses... this kind of hindred early aggression :(

My people were staining their clothes with oil :crazyeye:

al-thor: Just to highlight the palace jump effect. Last night during taking of an AI capital where beer & sausage abound, I had a Great Leader appear. I moved him to that city and rushed a palace. At the time I was making 61gpt. I also had over 20 cities on the northern & southern coasts only making 1spt,with 8-10 lost to corruption. When the palace was complete, my treasury was now making 138gpt and all of those corrupt cities were producing 6-8 shields each. So by simply moving the palace to a distant location, I gained over 75gpt & 160spt in my empire. Also all of those cities that I had taken around my new capital were now functional and were somewhat less flip prone. I expect to be able to complete the acquisition of this tribes cities and then us the captured workers to improve the land.

SirPleb: That's quite an interesting variant you've chosen. With the exception of signing MA's with the remants of your defeated foes against your likely opponent for the vote, do you think there's any thing else to sway the voters to your cause. (And thanks for enjoying the tale of Mursilis the Wanderer, I've learned quite a bit from your exploits and am glad to be able to return a little)

Stormbind: Nice write up. It's nice to see a person struggle against a programming flaw and not just give up. :hatsoff:

Isn't that a banned exploit!?

I thought it was too. That's why I didn't do it. You are allowed to jump it but only to a new core you are developing.

That's my plan. Develop a new core around the new palace. I've already got 8 cities and have 5 more in my sights. I expect to finish with around 15 cities in the new core.

I am playing the original Civilization 3 with the patch 1.29f. I am playing in the Open level, which provides no advantages or disadvantages to either the civilization controlled by the human player who is playing the game purely for enjoyment or to the civilizations controlled by the computer using the artificial intelligence installed with the game who play the game because they are forced to in order to attempt to make the human who is playing the game
happier, beyond those given by the Monarch difficulty level.

One of my jaguar warriors wanted me to post his friend's and his journals, so I'll start that after some initial talk. Editorial comments will be given in brackets.

Even though I didn't have this idea from the start, I have decided to try for conquest, and my plans have been according to this goal. I moved my worker south, saw nothing preferable, and settled Tenochitlan 1 square to the north. I started working on a jaguar warrior and started minimum mysticism research to get polytheism to sell to the other civs. Now the journals shall begin.

Journal of Itzcoatl, soldier in 1st Jaguar Warrior Regiment
[Itzcoatl was the first emperor of the Aztecs.]
3700 BC: I have joined the first regiment of the Aztec army. Our commander tells us our job will be to explore. We may see some action fighting barbarians. More regiments are being trained. We start to the west.
3650 BC: Already our exploring has gained some success. Our commander says we found a good-looking site for a second city.
3550 BC: We met a scout today. He said he was from the Iroquois. He showed us some clay bowls their laborers made. We tried to tell him how to be a good warrior. Since he is not a fighter, we were not successful.
3500 BC: Our leader TimBentley tells us to give the scout the code to being a warrior in return for some clay pots (apparently called "pottery") and 35 gold.
My friend Ahuitzotl [the fifth emperor, under whom the Aztec empire reached its peak] sent me news that he has joined the 2nd Jaguar Warrior Regiment
3350 BC: We have reached the borders of the Iroquois. We dare not enter, otherwise their people will be very upset.
3150 BC: The Iroquois have learned to work with bronze. They apparently use it in preparing spearmen to defend their cities and settlers. We have found the northwest coast of our continent.
3000 BC: Another regiment has met America. They also can work with bronze and seem to have superior masons to our empire.
2950 BC: Some important guy apparently ranked us the 5th most powerful nation in the world. [He must know navigation or magnetism. Wouldn't it be nice to buy some technologies from him?]
2900 BC: We start to go northeast.
2710 BC: The city of Teotihuacan has been founded. [Both cities are working on granaries.]
2630 BC: We have just finished exploring the northern edge of Lake Texcoco.
We go southwest to explore to the west of our empire
2550 BC: My friend Ahuitzotl informed me some friendly barbarians taught them how to use bronze. [ :D ] We now know everything the Iroquois do.
2430 BC: We have found the western coast of our continent. We will go south.
2390 BC: Both the Iroquois and America know this cool invention called the wheel. By attaching it to something, you can go faster.
2110 BC: Mystics and oracles have started popping up in our empire, amazed by the forces of nature. We start to search for other gods to worship. We meet a barbarian warrior. We fortify to prepare for his assault.
2070 BC: The barbarian failed miserably in his attack. We continue our exploration. We find the camp from where he came. We must destroy it.
2030 BC: We defeat the barbarians waiting in their camp and pillage it, finding 25 gold. We are heavily injured, so we will move to the mountain for some needed rest.
1990 BC: Work has begun on the palace in Tenochitlan. A gate has been placed in front of a cave. It has humble beginnings, but surely will become great.
1830 BC: We have finished our exploring expedition for now. We shall return home to defend our cities from barbarians.
1725 BC: Tlateloco has been founded in the northwest. The citizens themselves have dispersed the barbarian camp.
1700 BC: Bad news. Barbarians killed the jaguar warrior regiment defended Tlateloco and have pillaged it for 125 gold! Also, another regiment has been badly injured, so we must deal with the barbarians that attacked them.
1675 BC: We fortify, ready for the barbarian attack.
1650 BC: This will probably be my last entry. I think I have fatal injuries. The barbarians attacked with surprising fierceness, wiping out practically everybody. I wish my best to the Azte [the entry stops here]

[This post was too long, so I'll post the next journal in another post.]

Journal of Ahuitzotl, soldier in 2nd Jaguar Warrior Regiment
1650 BC: I recently learned of my friend Itzcoatl, a soldier in the 1st Jaguar Warrior Regiment. They found his journal at the scene of the battle. It gives a pretty good history of the empire. I have decided to continue this legacy, and this journal is in memory of Itzcoatl. Let me start by giving you a brief overview of my life.

I joined the army in 3350 BC. My job has been to explore and to kill barbarians. While fighting the barbarians, we have become veterans. My regiment also met some friendly barbarians who kindly taught us how to use bronze. My orders have continued up to this date. Now I shall return to the present.
1600 BC: Oh dear. More barbarians are moving toward Tlateloco, and nobody can catch it. We are heading there as quickly as possible to stop those barbarian attacks.
1575 BC: The barbarians have pillaged Tlateloco for 101 gold! Those fiends!
1550 BC: More barbarians near Tlateloco! We will catch them before they reach the city.
1525 BC: We annihilated those barbarians. We return to Tlateloco to rest a little.
1475 BC: A jaguar warrior regiment escorting a settler see another barbarian, who they kill with only slight losses. They see the camp. They head toward it.
1450 BC: They attack the camp killing a warrior. There are barbarians on horses there. [Obviously someone knows horseback riding.]
1425 BC: They kill the horsemen and pillage the camp for 25 gold. They will rejoin the settler.
1375 BC: Our general says many jaguar warriors are being produced in preparation for war with America. Perhaps we shall be part of the invading army, or perhaps we shall defend the cities.
1350 BC: We now have dyes. The people are happier since they can have colored clothing.
1325 BC: We are being joined in Tlateloco by another regiment.
1300 BC: The city of Tlaxcala was founded to the north.
1275 BC: The palace's construction is going well; it now has a nice lawn.
975 BC: We are told there are greater forces than nature in the world. We now worship many gods, including Xipe Totec, Huitzilopochtli, Quetzalcoatl, Tezcatlipoca, Tlaloc, Coactlicue, Xochiquetzal, and Xochipilli. Our leader decides to tell the Iroquois about the many gods in return for an alphabet so we can write [Maybe these journals actually were oral traditions], masons to build better buildings, the wheel so we can go faster, and the knowledge of how to work with this mineral called iron, which we did not previously know had any special properties. We offer 31 gold for these services. We also tell America about our gods in return for all of their gold, 31 gold. The Iroquois know how to ride horses, which is even better than having them pull our wheeled vehicles. We do not have any iron in our territory, but we do have horses. We start to work on improving our writing skills. We start to move near the American city of Chicago, along with many other warriors.
950 BC: The Iroquois demand 48 gold. Our leader gives in, since we are not ready for war with them yet. Some important guy says we are the least happy people in the world. We'll be a lot happier when we start conquering. [Actually war will not have an effect on happiness, since we are not in a representative government.]
900 BC: We have declared war on America. Our most elite troops kill the warrior in Chicago and raze it to the ground. Our people are so happy they starting producing more industry and gold. [I change from minimum research to maximum research while still gaining money.]
875 BC: We have reports of barbarians traveling on the water in something they call "ships." [Someone knows Map Making on the other continent.]
800 BC: Washington is heavily defended. We lose one elite regiment and one veteran regiment. Our regiment is only successful in doing a little bit of damage to a spearman before we retreat. However, we finally take the city. The army will rest in Washington for a little while.
730 BC: We start heading to Boston, the new capital of America.
710 BC: Two regiments kill the spearman in Boston and raze the city. After one regiment dies fighting a warrior next to Boston, we kill him, but are heavily injured. We will return to Washington to rest. Three uninjured regiments are heading to the city of Atlanta to the east.
670 BC: The war has not gone well today. Our regiments failed to capture Atlanta. Two retreated and one dies. However, we have learned how to write better. We will now begin to make maps so we can sail the seas [actually the coast] like the barbarians. We teach the Iroquois how to write in return for knowledge on how to ride horses and 100 gold.
650 BC: An American warrior has marched on Washington and was killed before he reached the city.
590 BC: The city of Calixtlahuaca was founded on the former site of Chicago, where iron can be found. Horsemen will now be trained instead of jaguar warriors, since they are better attackers.
570 BC: We have learned the city of CENSORED has built the Great Pyramids and that the city of CENSORED has built the Oracle. I've never heard of these cities, so I assume they must be on a different continent. More warriors have joined us in Washington, so we shall soon continue our invasion. We shall head to New York.
530 BC: Tenochitlan has finished The Colossus, which will improve our income.
510 BC: The battle for New York has ended in defeat. We managed to kill a spearman despite heavy injuries, but only one other regiment has survived. We shall return to Washington.
470 BC: The battle for Atlanta also has failed. The three remaining regiments shall regroup with us as we build a larger army.
450 BC: The so-called golden age has ended, as people are not as happy about our war efforts. [Actually it was just a coincidence that some failures at war accompanied the end of 20 turns since the first jaguar warrior victory.]
430 BC: We have learned how to make maps and how to travel by water. We will now start to learn how to work with numbers in advanced ways.
370 BC: We have gotten silks. The people can make even better clothing, making them happier.
350 BC: We buy the Iroquois' map of the world for 16 gold, which provides the view of most of our continent. Horsemen and jaguar warriors will work together to capture Atlanta.
290 BC: Apparently Atlanta has not improved its defenses. The first horseman regiment to attack it destroys the city. The army will return to Washington to attack New York. Jaguar warrior training continues, since we can be taught to use iron swords, which will help us fight better than horsemen.
270 BC: We are moving with other jaguar warriors and horsemen to New York.
250 BC: Our attacks on New York continue to fail. We were injured in the attack, and only 2 horsemen regiments survived.
230 BC: 2 horsemen regiments finally capture New York. Another jaguar warrior regiment and horsemen regiment capture a settler, who will work for our empire. New York has gems. The jewelry that can be made with this resource make our people happier. We sign peace with America for their map of the world (completing our view of the continent), the new city of Chicago, and a worker. Some troops remain here, but many head to Iroquois to conquer them. We learn mathmatics, the science of numbers, and start to learn how to construct buildings better [minimum research]. We build an embassy in Philadelphia, the only remaining American city. It has only two spearmen defending it, and it does not produce units very quickly. We also build an embassy in Salamanca, the Iroquois capital. It only has two spearmen, but produces much better than Philadelphia. We earn some rest with our excellent performance in the war, and will stay here while most of the army goes toward the Iroquois.
210 BC: The city of Tlaxcala is starting on a secondary palace, which will cause our citizens to work more efficiently.
170 BC: Steps have been added to the palace, causing easier access.
150 BC: We have obtained iron in the mountains near Chicago. Many jaguar warriors have been given swords and trained to use them. Since Washington does not have a barracks, we have not.
130 BC: We declare war on the Iroquois. Swordsmen start by capturing an Iroquois settler.
110 BC: We accidentally let a barbarian warrior pillage some improvements near Washington. Some elite warriors quickly take care of him.
90 BC: America founded Boston; some horsemen are ready to capture it if needed. Swordsmen have destroyed the city of Tonawanda.
70 BC: Swordsmen have captured the city of Cattaraugus.
30 BC: Swordsmen have destroyed Mauch Chunk.
10 AD: We celebrate the new millenium, and the destruction of Centralia.
50 AD: Swordsmen destroy Tyendenaga. I start to wish I could see some action.
90 AD: Swordsmen destroy Akwesasne.
130 AD: Swordsmen capture Grand River.
170 AD: CENSORED built the Great Library, and CENSORED built the Great Wall. We have started building galleys to explore the water.
190 AD: Swordsmen have destroyed Niagra Falls.
210 AD: Swordsmen have destoryed St. Regis. We start moving toward Philadelphia.
230 AD: After buying their world map for 1 gold, we declare war on America. The horsemen capture Boston. The two horsemen regiments and the elite jaguar warrior regiment capture Philadelphia. America has founded Atlanta to the east, however. Our regiment goes north to help with that city.
250 AD: After the Iroquois founded Grand River right next to them, swordsmen destroy the city. Goodness, there is a large army near Atlanta [this will become more clear later]!
260 AD: The northern army spots an Iroquois swordsman. The units are not doing well against the American army. We shall help them.
310 AD: We attack an American archer, but must retreat.
320 AD: We defended ourselves against the archer; we will now return to Washington.
340 AD: Swordsmen have captured Salamanca! Iroquois will now surely fall.
360 AD: Swordsmen have captured Oil Springs.
380 AD: Swordsmen have captured Allegheny! The army reported that a nearby archer simply ran away and was never seen again. However, the Iroquois found the city of Niagra Falls on the southwest coast.
400 AD: Many barbarian horsemen are headed to our cities! We must defend ourselves!
410 AD: We have learned how to construct buildings better. We start to learn laws to make our empire more peaceful within [maximum science].
420 AD: Swordsmen have captured Atlanta, leaving America with only Seattle.
430 AD: Scouts have seen a large army moving out of Niagra Falls. They must build a large army when they start over in a new area. Since war has become more difficult, we sign peace with the Iroquois and America for their world maps and all of their gold. We will now seek to make our empire stronger within.
460 AD: Tlaxcala has finished the Forbidden Palace (are multiple palaces forbidden?), reducing corruption in the empire. A galley sailing across the ocean has seen borders, but has not met that civilization.
470 AD: Unfortunately, the galley sank before it could meet anyone. CENSORED has finished the Hanging Gardens.
480 AD: We learn how to make laws. Some people begin to think deep thoughts. It's too deep for me.
500 AD: We have met CENSORED. They CENSORED, CENSORED, AND MORE CENSORED. We learn a new type of government called Monarchy from America in return for the study of mathematics and laws. We also learn their world map.
510 AD: Our "philosophers" have learned much. We will focus our learning in other areas. We trade with CENSORED and CENSORED... [The rest of this journal is classified. I will declassify it and other censored information in the next spoiler and discuss my trades and a technical issue I had to resolve.]
Journal ends

The trades included learning Currency, bringing me from the Ancient Ages to the Middle Ages. At this point, I am technologically ahead of Iroquois and America, even with one other civilization, and behind the other four civilizations. I have a score of 626, which is higher than any other nation. I also am the most powerful, and have quite a bit of culture. America and Iroquois have only one city each. I am not sure if I will achieve it, but I will continue to try for a conquest victory. I forgot to record it, but at some point I also added columns to my palace.

In the next spoiler, I will display the journal of someone new (perhaps a horseman who upgrades to a CENSORED and then to a CENSORED (oops, to a knight and to a cavalry; everyone knows the units in the Middle Ages, so it is not a spoiler)). I could have done better with city placement and barbarian control, but I think I made up for it with my successful attacks on Iroquois and America.

Yup, I will also:
o Purchase embassies
o Give each one something (100g or a tech)
o Take ROPs and MPPs with each (after trading for Nationalism, which I won't research)
o Trade maps
o Make sure I have a luxury/resource trade with each

Will the total of all that will be enough to offset 4000 years of war in a single turn? By spoiler 3 we should know the answer :)

I bet the weakest and lowest scoring civ will win the election ;) J/K I think this is the most unusual GOTM I've ever seen hitherto. Bashing everyone you meet from first eyesight up untill the moment you expect them to hand the UN to you.
Good luck SirPleb.

I thought the only way to win a Diplo (UN vote) in an AW game was by trapping that sole settler after capturing the last civ.

As far as the vote goes it is possible, check out SOTD #142.

Having an active war with MA/MPP tends to (temporarily) negate a poor attitude, even if you have taken a bunch of their cities.

We're counting on that in our SGOTM.

So what will the award be if SirPleb places in both GOTMs?

He'll be doing extemely well to get a medal playing AW even for him. Wheres your report Alan? I'm still stewing over GOTM 25 where you did me out of what would have been my I only top 20 finish and I want revenge. I've done better in this GOTM than I have been doing recently so I might be able to put a spoke in your wheels this time. Bring it on :)

Predator PTW

In the beginning I was frustrated about the slow growth after missing the wheat. I built Tenochtitlan one tile to the SE. Like conehead234 I settled Teotihuacan (the second city) by the river and built a temple in order to get the wheat within range.

Jags quickly scouted most of the continent but found no "good" goody huts except Mysticism. The jungle to the west looked discouraging. I slowly set up two RCP rings at 3 and 6.

My aim was set on conquest victory. Realizing that Tenochtitlan easily could pump out one jag warrior per turn, I decided to warrior rush America as soon as I had Monarchy. The time came in 900 BC when I moved about 10 jags onto a hill next to Washington. I only had 6 cities by then. The conquest of America went very well, but I made one grave mistake: I should have given monarchy to America before attacking. Then they would have been unable to pop-rush defenders and I would not have been forced to auto-raze towns.

The Americans were dead in 210 BC. When they had only Boston left I had made peace, waited for it to expand, and then broken the peace treaty. America and Iroquios didn't know each other. An American settler had slipped out of the net, however, so I was a bit afraid that the Iroquios and America would meet before the end.

In 210 BC, the same year America vanished, I ROP-raped Iroquios and took Salamanca with horsemen and 1 swordsman. The war went surprisingly well, and I took their last city in 30 AD but again a settler or two slipped away. Towards the end of the war I managed to sneak in the Forbidden Palace in Salamanca. The one swordsman I had was very valuable as a defender of Salamanca in the early, critical stages of the war.

I built one wonder, great Lighthouse in 470 BC. The Oracle was in Salamanca.

The Middle Ages were reached around 300-200 BC.

You could be right. I was simply answering a hypothetical question.

Where's your report Alan?
Sadly I was spoilt this month. I had to check (and debug) the Jason parameter data for this game after Ainwood uploaded the games through my new magic system for the first time this month, and I think that told me enough to affect my decisions. I also had to play the game at breakneck speed (for me) to reach the Asian civ contact problem in order to verify it and produce a Mac fix.

All in all my game has been a strange combination of undue haste conflicting with unfair map information. I have continued with it for personal interest, and to check if there are any further gotchas in store for players, but I'll not submit. My note taking was inadequate ... pronounced 'zero' ... so I can't provide a decent writeup either :(

So this month the field's all yours, and you'll have to wait until next month to have your wicked way with my ranking, when I hope the Jason system will operate without my intervention, and I can join in with the same naive innocence as you . We definitely need a :fingers_crossed: smilie around here.

I'll just have to settle for passing you in the GPR then :D Until I can demonstrate my innate superiority directly :smug: ;)
Niave innocence? Compared to some that may true but my self-image is that of battle-hardened civ veteran. And I've got the scars to prove it - this one here is GOTM 17, this one is GOTM 21 and this big nasty looking one is GOTM30. Even so I will always be a virginal noob to some. groucho

Well, you'll always be a big cuddly dog to me, Sam. But never virginal :mischief:

Hello,

It isn't my first GOTM but it's the first time i will try to participate to a spoiler (and to the forum). My objective is to win by conquest with an aggressive strategy instead of having spaceship as the last solution like in previous GOTM. I'm playing with PTW/Open.

4000BC:
Settler moved to SE to build Tenochtitlan in 3950. Build 3 warriors to explore South, North and all around the starting point
Worker: Mining then roading the start point
Research Mysticism at 100%

3500: Meet the Americans. Exchange my Warrior Code against Pottery+10g

3250: Meet the Iroquois. Exchange my Warrior Code against Bronze+10g

3000: Discover Mysticism. Research Iron

2950: Discover the Wheel thanks to a hut

2800: Build a new city in the west of Tenochtitlan. Teoituacan builds a Granary to produce settlers

2150: Exchange with American: my Mysticism against Masonry + 50g

2070: Discover Iron. Go for Polytheism at 10%
When I saw the two iron spots in the South, I sent four warriors to prevent the Americans from sending settlers to build cities near them. I put these warriors along their boundaries and when a settler tried to go out, I slided them to block the settler without attack it. This strategy was successfull and the Americans abandoned their project near 800BC.

1550: Tlatelco

1500: Texcoco to control one of the two iron sources

1400: Tlaxcala

950: Discover Polytheism. Research Monarchy and switch to it when I got it.
American: Poly against Alphabet+HorseBasck+19g
Iroquois: Poly against 130g

630BC ~ 250 AC: The american War
I decided to build swordsmen in order to invade the american country. First I asked the Americans to give Writing, cities or gold to keep peace between our nations but they answered me to come back when I can justify my menace ! They are crazy ! Since i'm an obedient boy, i declared war and a pile of swordsmen invaded the Americans. We can see them during the negotiation ... After this invasion, Americans asked many times for peace but Aztecs are very spiteful and prefered to conquer the american cities with their soldiers to punish this insolence.

GOTM32_give_me_writing.jpg

1 heroe appeared during this war. It has been used for building an army of swordsmen.

30AC: There is now only one american city but it is very far in the south. Some swordsmen walked in the snow during years whereas the others went to the north to attack the iroquois. Near 250AC, Miami was captured and Americans defeated.
