Actually this is "the" Monument against Legions ...

Wonderful looking- WOW- Civ3s two greatest PSP artists making their own versions of this beauty  b4 you guys :)

For all those "Latin-Lovers" amongst you:

Vare, Vare, redde mihi legiones! (Caesar Augustus, Imperator Romanum)

Adversus
nullam gentem sine iustis causis bella fiebant. Varus quidem, imperator
Romanorum, qui in Germania pugnabat, gravem cladem accepit. Inde
magnus tumultus Romae factus est. Augustus hac clade nuntiata adeo

Varus, give my legions back ;)
Usually as Rome fanatic I won't like a wonder for that bloddy traitor, but it looks good and the splash is really nice. :goodjob:

well, i have! to post some comment here. as you can see beneath my atavar i am living in Germany, and actually my home is about 30 kilometres (about 20miles) away from this wonder! :) i never expected this monument to appear in civ3!

more info (also in english): Arminius memorial.

The real battle scene is about 100kilometres away near the city Osnabrück. there is an archeological site and an exhibition of the artifacts found there in the soil.

info about that: kalkriese. unfortunately in german and dutch, only. but you might want to look at some pictures.

Nice job on the wonder.

Has anyone else read The Battle That Stopped Rome by Peter Wells? I was sorely disappointed by it...

read an interesting thesis on it, essentially talking about how the monument gave Germany a hero in the time of nationalism, where France had Charlemagne and England had King Author (yes, a real king).

oo oo oo! brainwave!
available with nationism, lowers war weariness, and heigtens the chance of creating a leader. this could finally let universal suffrage be used to put a courthouse in every city to show a developed political system's effects on corruption and propaganda!

I prefer Charles de Gaulle like hero...;)
Charlemagne is a little bit old history and put his capital in Germany ... ( Aix la Chapelle )... A good hero for the future federal state ( France + Germany ) ;)

What do you mean by " Roi du culture " ? Perhaps "Roi de la culture " ? ;)

For my personal culture : what is Amish Country ? For me it means people choosing to live apart the modern life, is it right ?

Ohh! I forgot :goodjob: Rufus !

where France had Charlemagne

don't want to seem to B nitpicking but Charlemagne was ruler over both France AND Germany- so that thesis ommits certain facts (probably merely mirroring the French cultural identity of nationalist times) to start with. The funny thing is that King Arthur is not even English either- actually fought the Angles & Saxons(the to be English).

Certainly I get where you r comming from tho :) rather than giving this wonder away with nationalism, I'd add a non-tradeable, non-era specific tech called X Culture/etc (where X is the culture this wonder is for) and give it to the X Civ. With X a resource XR becomes available with which wonder X can be built.

I say this because Nationalism has more to do with leaders of flesh and blood than mere myths: Napoleon, Metternich, Bismarck, Washington, Hitler, De Daulle, Stalin- these Guys are themselves nationalist idols of their time (if you forgive the expression)

Very well done, Rufus!!! :goodjob:

(Wasn't there a different wonder splash at the beginning??? - Anyway, this one is just perfect!!!)

I think, the Roi du Culture made a perfect suggestion of how to make use of this wonder! :goodjob: as well

WINTER

i dont wanna sound too captious, but Stalin really doesnt fit for that line as long as communism has a great deal of internationalism ;)

Rufus - WOT!!

and what has Stalin got to do with communism? I was speaking about Nationalist Figureheads- I see him as Hitler's nemesis in the role of strengthening an abstract Soviet national identity (remember that the United Soviet Socialist Republic is not a nation but a state that includes people's other than Russians)

For Communism, why not Lenin? I think that he was considered the father of USSR, not Joseph. (ok, there is also the K report on the so-called cult of personality...)
