Space Opera 2016-10-05

I allready had all of it, and the original scenario loads ok. It's only this one that crashes :( I checked the files requested in that txt file, and I got them all... what can I be missing?...

Hmm... if the new map is already in the same folder as the "Space Opera.biq" file I'm not quite sure what the problem is. Try opening the new one in the editor and go to "Scenario Properties". Make sure the "Scenario Search Folder" field reads "Space Opera".

You could also rename Navydawg's original .biq file to "Space Opera Original" and then rename the new one to "Space Opera" so as to replace the original file.

If you still have problems with this start a thread in the main Creation & Customization forum and we'll give NavyDawg his thread back :)

Leaven, your tips worked like a charm, thanks a lot!:goodjob:

But shouldn't the terrain be hidden from the start?

Sooo, yeah...
Since several people commented about the map I never thought to look and see if I in fact uploaded the right one. So, as it happens, I did not. Here is the correct map:

Once I noticed that the error message had the word "Alkesh" in it, I realized I must have posted the wrong file. The previous one was for a version I made with the nebula's from the Star Trek mod turned on; which obviously had a few extra units added in.

Sorry for the inconvenience, and to everyone who had trouble with that other one.

@jlvfr: I hope this new one works for you. Sorry to try and help you fix a problem I created.

No problem mate, glad to help. I have great admiration for this kind of work. Last time I created scenarios was in Steel Panthers!

Could I get just a little explanation about the game? I can't seem to move my units for more than a few spaces around my planet. The rest (empty space) are off limits. Do we get techs to cross this?

There are also planets I can't seem to colonize. Is this race-related? Will techs solve it?

You can't move around because that is supposed to represent the massiveness of space and the probability of straying off and getting lost in the nothingness (which is actually a good way of adding a bit of realism). Think of it as a predefined road that "your" solar government deems as safe for traversing and not getting lost.

What planet are you refering to? I haven't had such problems in my games yet...

Thought so. Really neat idea too. What's the tech to get out?

Well... it's a giant moon.. . maybe it's not colonizable...

There is actually no tech to allow foot units to wander off into the void of space. The only units that can travers these areas are spaceships, and they can do so from the very beginning. If you want to get your foot units, settlers, and/or workers to another solare system, you're going to have to load them into a transporter (or a space battleship that can carry units) and fly them there. Otherwise, you're kind of stuck where you are. ;)

Yeah, moons just represent squares with great amounts of bonus resources and considerably boosted food, shield, and gold production. They are indeed not colonizeable. Only the actual planets (which are refered to as "systems", by the way) are suited for new cities.

Thanks for the explanations :)

Humm... every ship I see in the civipedia says "unsafe for deep space"... we get a tech to avoid this or am I missing something?...

Gen Rommel, Stazro, thanks for the explanations.

Yes, moons can't be colonized, they are bonus regions for their system. Also, the Stealth Cruiser is the only ship that can safely travel through deep space. This represents the danger of travel in deep space and also helps gameplay by slowing down exploration and how quickly civs meet each other.

@ Leaven, thanks for uploading the new map, it looks awesome. I've been rather busy lately, but I'll give it a go as soon as I can.

An idea just poped to mind... :mischief:

Remember Dune? The HUGE ships of the Navigator's Guild?

How about a super carrier, big enough to carry say, 10 Battlecruisers? Such a ship would cost almost as much as a great wonder, have high defense but no weapons...

You could not do that, as Battle cruisers already can carry units. There is a code in the editor that prevents unit that can carry other units from being load onto transports. It is a  shame. I have also read Dune, and it would have been an interesting addition to the game.

Well... You could always remove the transport capacity of battle-cruisers (since it seems a bit of controversy to have them be haulers), put in a new haulerunit if nessecary, THEN get the mega-carriers. ^^ Personaly I find the idea very appealing, but I'll reserve further judgement until Ifinish downloading the scenario.

And yes, Dune was a true masterpiece.

It would be pretty easy to take away the cruisers transport abilities, especially since they only transport missiles anyway, but in the end what would be the point? If you had a ship which carried other ships to the other side of the galaxy, you would only have naval forces when you got there. Thus you couldn't conquer or colonize any systems, just take out other ships.

On a similar note, I wouldn't mind if later ships could cross into deep space, since by the time you can build them, you already know a lot of other races anyway.

@ General of All: Welcome to CFC![party]

I don't think a naval unit can carry other naval units, so a "mother ship" a la Dune wouldn't work in Civ. It's a nice idea though. You may be pleased to know that I am adding a large freighter to the expansion, which can carry more ground units. Maybe this will scratch the itch. BTW, from a unit making perspective, I can't make ships much bigger than the Battle Cruisers due to the max 240x240 frame size.

@ Leaven, allowing ships to cross deep space in the late game is not a bad idea, I'll certainly consider it. I think I can use a tech with the "allow trade over ocean" flag checked to allow this.

I can't embark ground troops! All my grunts & mercs refuse to embark on the battlecruisers/carriers! What am I doing wrong?
