Congratulations to the winners!

Great writeups in the spoiler threads :goodjob: that's what really makes GOTM a remarkable experience. Thanks for the feedback on the map. :)

Congratulations all, especially Gosha, Jeffa, and Eric - see you've finally got your cow, only domino to go. We have a chance to see 3 new eptathletes next tour :)

Results 2 days after game deadline? GOTM staff is breaking record after record! :goodjob: Congrats everyone. :D

p.s. awaiting eagerly to see where everyone settled - maybe noone else settled 1S?

Here's where everyone settled.

The Small Print:
The numbers by each player's name indicate the turn settled on (starting turn is 0). Players are colour coded by game class (challenger=red, adventurer=blue). Symbols indicate victory condition, if there's no symbol then the player either retired or was defeated. The yellow border indicates the land that was visible at the start of the game.

Congrats to the winners! :goodjob:

Congrats to the staff on the speed record! :goodjob: :goodjob: And thanks for the game! :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

Of note, two losses, one retirement only. If DS had thought to seize his DOM at the last minute, two losses only.

With just two losses, all of the losers were winners! :D

Great game, and the staff certainly got the results done quickly. :)

Thanks to staff for all their dedication. :goodjob:

Congrats to all the winners!!! Great jobs by all.

Now my question(s)??? How is it that "Final Scores" very so widely given very similar finish dates and strategies. I am specifically looking at comparisons between the top 3 finishers and a seperate comparison between C63 and myself.

C63 crushed me in finish date and yet got a lower final score with the same VC.

Same can kind of be said for the top 3....CP finished 3rd, but had to have been 40 turns faster than 1st or 2nd.

I am not complaining at all...I just still don't understand how the "scoring system" works in this game, and I've been playing versions of it for more than 15 years now....:sad::sad::sad::sad::sad::sad::sad::saaaaaaaaad::sad::sad::sad:

We have a chance to see 3 new eptathletes next tour :)
Nah, you won't see Erkon claiming an eptathlon with GOTM 40 - would be cheating to grab an award in the game he created himself! :lol:

A little searching turned up this post that claims to explain the scoring system. Not sure I understand it though.

I have some questions as well (and like Ronnie1, not complaining, just wondering how this works). If I compare Gosha190's scores to mine on the full results page, he has a "Score" of 6912 and a "Final Score" 155873, with a finish date of 1514 AD. I have a "Score" of 2996 and a "Final Score" of 55995, with an earlier finish date, 1454 AD. What's the difference between "Score" and "Final Score"? Is it just the accounting for the finish date? What's strange is that the ratio of our "Score" is 2.3 (6912/2996), but the ratio of our "Final Score" is 2.8 (155873/55995). So his "Final Score" is proportionately bigger than his "Score", even though he finished later than I did. Does the GOTM use some other factor in the scoring via the HOF mod?

Like I said, not complaining, just curious.

There's no score calculation in the HoF Mod.

The "Score" we publish is what's called the "Raw Score" in that Dianthus post, or the 'Total Score" in the display you get by hovering over your score. It's the sum of the four score components, each divided by its max value and multiplied by its weight, and is not modified by the date. We only use that number to award the Cow.

The "Final Score" we publish is the one you see as "Score by winning this turn". It adds a winning bonus that depends on how fast the victory was achieved. That's the one that determines the medals and the low score awards.

The winning bonus calculation uses a power function that is not intuitive, to me, at least, and makes it difficult to answer your specific question comparing two final scores with very different base scores, possibly based on a very different mix of the components.

Back in the early days of Civ4 GOTMs, I graphed the 600+ scores for GOTM 1 showing the strong correlation between victory speed and score.

To give a simple answer to the original question: The reason two people with the exact same in-game score and end date can still get vastly different victory scores is that the final victory score is non-linear separately for each component, and that each component is weighted differently in the final reckoning.

As a very simplified example disregarding two of the factors (land and wonders), if you have 2000 base score of which 1000 is pop (200/1000 * 5000) and 1000 is tech (180/360 * 2000), your victory score on turn 330 (of 660) would be

PopScore = PopFactor*FinalPop/(MaxPop ^ (CurrentTurn/MaxTurn)) = 5000*200/(1000^(330/660)) = 31622
TechScore = TechFactor*FinalTech/(MaxTech ^ (CurrentTurn/MaxTurn)) = 2000*180/(360^(330/660)) = 18973

Total score = PopScore + TechScore = 50595

Note that despite having the same ingame base score in both components, they contribute very differently to the final score. Now compare this with a player with same base score of 2000, of which 1500 is pop (300/1000 * 5000) and 500 is tech (90/360 * 2000). Doing the same calculations again, for winning on the same turn, we get

PopScore = PopFactor*FinalPop/(MaxPop ^ (CurrentTurn/MaxTurn)) = 5000*300/(1000^(330/660)) = 47434
TechScore = TechFactor*FinalTech/(MaxTech ^ (CurrentTurn/MaxTurn)) = 2000*90/(360^(330/660)) = 9486

Total score = PopScore + TechScore = 56920

Quite a significant difference, with the emphasis being on the fact that population is more worth, more more worth than it is in the base ingame score. :crazyeye:
