Running 2008 or 2009 quad 2.66 Pro with Snow Leopard, 8G RAM, Geforce 7300.

Please help! My bootcamp is giving me issues, so I decided to try the port but I can't get past the intro video - the whole system freezes and force quit, etc does nothing. I know the video card is below minimum, is that causing this? (It ran fine at min graphics with windows XP on bootcamp, but that may not mean anything.)

Thanks in advance:)

I have a 1st generation MacPro - 4 cores, 2.66GHz, twice-upgraded graphics.

My current video card is a 8800GT, and works fine with Civ3/4/5.

My first upgrade was a 7300GT, which is still installed, but not connected to a display. So I plugged my second display into the 7300GT and fired up Civ5 to test your situation. It hung - no force quit, no option - I had to reboot.

I would therefore conclude that your 7300 is the problem - probably its OpenGL driver is substandard. Sorry :(

I upgraded my 2006 Mac Pro to a radeon 5770. Works very well on civ V. It was really the only choice I had, but I believe you would have more options with a newer machine.

That card works? Cool!

I've invested a lot into this machine, so I'm hoping not to have to invest in another one any time soon. Now I have to decide whether to upgrade the gpu or just get a midrange PC laptop for gaming.

Apple may tell you it's unsupported, but it works fine in my older machine. It's $249 from Apple (and I recommend you buy it from them, rather than one of the cheaper PC versions). Apple also carries the 5870 for $449 if you happen to have a lot of cash lying around. Here's a link you can check out. This site provides VERY good info and Rob-ART will reply to questions.

Got the 5770 and it's working like a charm, thanks for the advice.:)

A possibly stupid question, but I can't find the answer anywhere: Can I run civ5 in DX11 on a mac - and if so, how do I switch it? (There used to be the option when you started civ5 but it's been gone for a while.)

DX11 (and DX9) is a Microsoft proprietary technology, and is not used in the Mac version. The Aspyr porting effort replaces the DirectX video software with OpenGL, which roughy matches DX9, but doesn't have equivalent capabilities to DX11.
