SGOTM 15 - The Missionary - Maintenance Thread

Thanks for your concern about our favorite site.

The Staff uses the site as often, and maybe more so, than most members do and are very aware there have been issues with downtime. There are ongoing discussions with the site host, Atomic Gamer, trying to determine what the cause of the problems are. They are not seeing some of the downtime and so the Staff, along with some members, have been keeping logs that have been sent to the site host. This has been ongoing for about a month or so. Hopefully, the results of this will be better reliability.

As to where to report things, site feedback is the place to go. If you click, you will find threads there asking (and complaining) about the situation.

Some of the differences you now see, such as:
Another new issue i'm noting is that the teams threads are usually in bold unless they were not posted for some day (or unless you have visited them).
are the result of changing settings to try to determine if these settings are causing the problems we've been experiencing or result from the rebuilding of the database to bring the site back online.

As for the effect on this SGOTM, that will have to be addressed by Alan and Neil as the game administrators. If you have a specific concern, please send one of them a PM.

Hope that helps answer the question.

I'd like to ask about some recent issues with the CFC forums. ....

Yesterday's outage was due to a specific database crash, and I really don't think one missing day on the forums justifies a change in the deadline for this game.

The intermittent forum access problems we have all experienced are, of course, well known the the forum admin, and the correct place for such discussions is in Site Feedback. They have been raised with the site hosting company, and are under investigation. I'd be surprised if the "To busy" intervals are having a big impact on team progress, but I'll listen to pleas for a change of deadline if I am underestimating their effect.

The most irritating effect of them, for me, is if I compose a message and then get the "Too busy" response when I post, I lose what I have written. I am trying to remember to copy my prepared post to my clipboard before hitting the Post button. Then, if the Post fails, I can paste my words of wisdom into a text document to wait until I can get back in.

Yes, I've noticed that threads I have read are still appearing, not bold, in my My Account ->New Threads listing since the database repair yesterday. It looks like a side-effect of that failure. I've raised it with the forum admin

The Staff is reacting quickly, as usual :goodjob:

Good to know the "busy server" issue is known and under investigation.
I use notepad too to save some post if i see that message, but if i got other things to do over the Internet, i simply go back to my post and open another tab in Firefox, then i try to submit from time to time until i manage to actually do.

For the deadline change, i'm not asking to do so, i'm just pointing out that the last week was a very troubled one and that yesterday's black-out can have caused some delay in playing the Turnsets for some Team. It was in the weekend, when the activity is usually more intense so it's not "just one day".

I run internet explorer and I've been able to push the back icon and recover what I wanted to post, without having to re-type it.

Yeah, the "back" button usually works for me too. Give it a try next time, Alan. :)

Do you really think I didn't try it? I just get the "Too busy" response again. Safari doesn't cache the data you've typed, and it tries to get the page again from the server. Maybe it's a bug, or maybe Internet Explorer is caching stuff it shouldn't - it wouldn't be the first time :p

When I get the "too busy" message after posting, using Chrome on Mac, I click "reload" and it asks if I want to submit the form data again. As long as I keep clicking reload and don't go anywhere else, it eventually posts my message. (Of course, I can still do things in other tabs, it's just the form submission tab that I have to leave on civfanatics for the reload trick to work.)

Yes, I could probably do that as long as I remember what that tab was and don't accidentally re-use it. Copy/pasting the message before hitting Post seems altogether safer, though.

Indeed! I once lost a >30 minutes post and that engraved in my mind just enough to force me to copy each post from now on.

A warning to all teams.

We are currently investigating a potential bug.

The result of this is that the WHEOORN fist may or may not be displaying properly.

While we are investigating, then I suggest that if you want to know WHEOORN status, you talk to each of the AI.

just curious about the advancement of the investigation ... any promising 'leads' yet? ;)

I guess the latest version of BUG has it right but isn't part of BUFFY3.19.003 yet.

Just to clarify something:

The winner of the SGOTM will be the team with the fastest victory, of any kind, that followed the special condition regarding Hinduism.

Teams that do not follow the special condition will be ranked after teams that do, in order of fastest finish. There will be no distinction made about degrees of not following the Hinduism rule.

So, if you are worried about your very survival, don't forget that you always have the option of changing out of Hindu.

Unusual Suspects are well on our way toward a quick Gold, but if other teams were, uh, interested in perhaps extending the deadline we selflessly would be willing to support such a request to show solidarity with our fellow SGOTMers. You know, in case certain AI leaders were being unusually difficult.

Spoiler alert. Some team(s) are barely in the ADs!

No extension, 4 months is plenty and there's almost one month left to pick up the pace.

*politely wonders if you happen to be playing through the same save file we the poor huddled others have*

Let's stick to 4 months. Plenty of time left to play.

I don't know if we (FE) can finish in time, but i hope so.

Moderator Action: If you have an issue with the post, please take it up with the staff (Neil or Alan) via PM. The maintenance thread is for info common to all teams. Beware of spoilers.
