I've felt golden ages have been rather underwhelming in Civ 5. I've tried several things with them in the past to improve this, and want to experiment with a different approach. In v142 they give +20% of each main yield to each city. This replaces the previous gold-tile effect and :c5science: from :c5happy:.

These yields include: :c5production::c5gold::c5science::c5culture: and :c5food: surplus.

I like it, and am looking forward to playing with it. Although, as a % bonus, it may benefit tall Civs more than wide, especially since they get GA's more often.

Maybe this would be a bit too micro-intensive, but what if each City could pick get a specific bonus, according to its City focus, during a Golden Age?
  • Default/:c5citizen:Governor focus: +15%:c5food::c5production::c5gold::c5science::c5culture: in this City
  • :c5food: focus: +50%:c5food: surplus in this City
  • :c5production: focus: +50%:c5production: in this City
  • etc.

@Albie: I'm pretty sure the whole point of Golden Ages is to help Tall empires; I think we're just trying to figure out how to make it fun/useful. :)
(Also, tall cities typically have more buildings and therefore modifiers, so a +% yield is inherently weaker for tall Civs anyway.)

I like it, and I agree with wobuffet, choice is amazing.

But I don't think you should get :c5food: surplus from a golden age since population is pretty much the main factor in how much happiness you actually have and more population isn't always a good thing. Plus, to me, it doesn't make much sense.

I'm not 100% about the choice thing, but that's probably just my inherent resistance to change... Nevertheless, 50% seems too powerful and will certainly be better-utilized by the player, how about around 30%? I think it would be a more interesting decision, because you'd have to sacrifice a little for the greater focus.

@Prodigy - People make lots of babies when the times are good - see 1950s US baby boom as an example.

PS - I finally hunker down and start a game with 141.2, and you have to go and release a new version!:p Changes look good, Thal - I can't believe how the mod is *still* progressing so much after all this time!:goodjob:

Something I thought of is cities with a focus on, say... culture... already produce more culture than most cities. They will get more out of a 20% modifier, so an extra bonus on top of that might not be necessary.

Maybe something like "+15%:c5food::c5production::c5gold::c5science::c5culture: (for default/:c5citizen:Governor focus)" vs "+25% in Focus-ed yield, +10% in others" would be better balanced?

I support changing Darius' UA too. :)

I really like Darius now, it makes playing a wide culture game very appealing. The fact that his UA makes me want to play differently equals a success in my book. Of course I have no experience with the new GA system so I can't speak to that right now, but I can't imagine it would be all that different.

I do like Wobuffet's proposition with a general bonus and a special one for focused specialization. It helps Tall Empires and you can specialize them even more. Will the AI always have Gold Focus then? Another thing to buff GA would be to let Happiness count towards the GA Bucked even if in GA. I think that was discussed already but I forgot the reason why it's not done?

I'll answer Persia in the other thread

With this change can we make the Taj Mahal more exciting? Maybe "Increases yields during Golden Ages by 10% and gives 5 Golden Age points every turn"?

That sounds like a very nice change. I don't think there's a wonder out there that touches GA's so it's good to have one focused on it.

The dream would be for every wonder to have an effect completely unique. Right now there are a few that don't have that. The Great Wall is the only one I can think of off the top of my head, and the Great Library isn't quite as exciting as it once was, despite still being incredibly powerful.

On the topic of GA's, I'm not sure how I feel about different focuses giving more bonuses, simply because the AI won't deal with it. Also, it would make puppets give much more gold.

There is still Chichen Itza which is also not very interesting (although quite powerful). And you pretty much have to beeline for Civil Service to get it.

I have a feeling I'll be doing exactly that more often now.:)

I can't say I've built Taj since it was an "extended Golden Age" with vanilla-effect Persia, though. It definitely needs some love.

Maybe the Chichen Itza and Taj Mahal should be split into benefiting wide / tall empires.

One of them can give extra yields to each city during a GA, benefiting wide, and the other gives :c5goldenage: points to Specialists, benefiting tall.
