The Tribal Elders of Delphi

In that case I defer to your greater wisdom on this matter and commend it to the ruler for his consideration. :)

If I can humbly step in, I would just like to remind that stoping the construction of our great King's Roads now would just leave it there spending money with limited benefit, and no trade routes. Since the great leader found it to be a good investment for the development and trade of our people, it would be unwise to leave it doing the opposite.

After, we can then ask our people to start training in the art of building, so we can improve our lands, wouldn't you agree?

Also, I understand 1889's wise words, the Shoshone will be a threat to us as we stand, lacking the strength to face them, even with this new shinny rock. What's the simplest way to get in his good side?

((You can call me Bazil as a character))

There is no need for you to be humble, O Great Lord Bazil; we are at your service and we serve at your pleasure. :)

With your permission I would like to appoint my fellow advisor to the ministry. Perhaps Minister of War and Foreign Affairs?

((Subject to change since I feel in the long-run there's more wisdom there than I, as chief minister can provide --- might eventually be an idea to replace me in my role. :p))

((I doubt I can replace you in your role, I'm trying to learn as you play ;) I still feel that 1889's has better knowledge/vision to take the war/foreign affairs, I can look into other parts of the government and see if I can fit somewhere))

((The Delphian Council chose you as king. So we are your advisers. You can choose to take our advice or not because you're the ruler. ;)))

((This is going to be interesting, as I've never played above prince. So yes, I will heed your advice a lot now. In any case, I've downloaded the save, so I'll at least look at it, either tomorrow or wednesday.))

I'd like to hear your words, wise men, about the following plan:
1) Finishing kings roads since our previous leader started it
2) Asking our people to practice the art of the builder

Also, I'd like to hear your visions on something for the near future:
3) Providing more space for our great nation ((new cities))
4) How should we prepare our great army in the near future

We are at your disposal, O Great One. We will provide you with the best advice we can but ultimately your word is law.

I'd like to hear your words, wise men, about the following plan:
1) Finishing kings roads since our previous leader started it

I believe the ministry is in agreement that the Kirrha-to-capital route may be completed on schedule but that the capital-to-Dostana route should be postponed and the working gang freed up to build improvements.

2) Asking our people to practice the art of the builder

I must apologise most profusely, my lord, as I do not understand your request.

Also, I'd like to hear your visions on something for the near future:
3) Providing more space for our great nation ((new cities))

Your ministry will consult on this matter. I do not believe we need to found any additional settlements at this stage, but I do believe we will eventually capture some Siamese cities. I would consult with the rest of your ministry first, though, before offering you any final and official advice on this matter.

4) How should we prepare our great army in the near future

My initial thoughts are to, once the barracks are finished, construct great siege engines and after that recruit more swordsmen. I would consult the rest of the ministry first before offering you official and final advice, though.

((1889: What do you think?))

I am certain that Your Majesty would wish the great Kings Road to be a source of strength and pride not a monument to vanity. Please forgive your humble minister if I devolve into technicalities but the my mind grasps these things slowly. Maintaining the road westward would cost your treasury 5 golds per phase, but due to Kirah's population the road should bring in 7 gold over the same period. That will bring glory to your reign.

Eastwards is yet an altogether different calculus. That path will cost 6 coin but bring in only 2. In addition your laborers will toil for many years on it rather than improving the Stone, Cotton or Cattle which will bring further benefits.

I think that your reign would be best glorified not by great buildings but simply by growing the numbers of your people, the more to glory in your magnificence and sing praise to you!

Kirrah has great untaped wealth along its coasts, encourage fishing to grow the population and your great road will be even more productive as a result. Dostana too could benefit in the same way as long as your people are happy.

In Delphi a caravan could bring in yet more gold and a stone works would produce happiness and a large increase in production.

More people, gold and production will be a fitting legacy for a great builder.

I apologize if I bore you with my mundane arithmetics but they are all I can offer. Alas I am too humble to see what martial forces could benefit us at this point or what additional lands could be settled.

I agree with the recommendations of my Honourable colleague.

((Also, because I couldn't use "1889" as a name in-character I was wondering what to call you.

So I had a look at ancient Greek numerals and found, similar to Roman numerals, you can actually spell out words from numbers.

The number one thousand, eight hundred and eighty nine results in the letters 'awpth', pronounced 'ah', 'au' (like 'door' or 'dinosaur'), 'p', 'th' (like 'breath' not 'breathe'). Ancient Greek male name endings are 'as', 'es' or 'os', and 'a' or 'o' are often used as epenthetic vowels to break up consonant clusters --- which is why Melda's son is Melodios [Melda's son] not Meldios --- so my ruminations yielded the following:

Awaupathos

Awaupathas

Awaupathes

Awaupothos

Awaupothas

Awaupothes

What do you think? :p

Or you could just make up your own in-character name. Or I could come up with a meaningful name based on Greek roots. What would you prefer? :D))

I was at a bit of a loss there to, but this is an excellent idea. I really like a three syllable version best though. I dub myself, "Awpathos."

((I really like Awpathos myself, simple and clean. Also, what i wrote up, apparently drunk with lack of sleep, was getting an extra builder or 2... "practice the art of the builder" should probably have been simply "asking our people to train in the art of building"... Silly me))

Oh wise men, I thank your words and insights, as they are really valuable to me. Minister Awpathos, worry not as your words carry great value, and I understand what worries you.

I agree that finishing the first part of the Kings Road is the real benefit to our people right now, and this will be the only part that should be focused now, as we have other pending matters. Providing more goods to our people will come afterwards. Fishing our coast to fill our bellies will be part of such plan then. We can leave the growth and army issues for later, we should not focus on too much at a time.

Growth shall be my legacy to all the Delphians, and I thank you for your good advices.
I shall reward you with something your hearts desire, name your requests, ministers Melodios and Awpathos.

((Today I'm a bit busy as I have small soccer games on Tuesdays with my friends, but I'm counting on playing 5 turns tomorrow, and post something up ASAP))

((Splendid! I'm pleased to have been of service. ;) All that self-taught linguistics paying off. :p))

((Since Melda seems to go through the story-telling path, I might as well give it a shot, a bit slow now, but maybe I can liven it up later.))

Story
=======================

Young Bazil looked through the window of the palace and pondered the last weeks. His father was a successful merchant and taught him many different trades, and gave him a rare chance at the time, to study with leaders in how to persuade and guide people. However, he departed not too long, leaving an unexperienced son to fend for himself. He was able to take the trade that his father left him, but he was still unsure which path to take. Sure, a few glasses *cof*bottles*cof* and some free-minded young girls helped him forget this for a bit, but that was not the case in that noon.

He wondered why the counsil chose him, and not the nephew of one of the great founders. Sure, he was able to build and trade, but was he able to lead and conquer the hearts of the Delphians? His mind wondered far as to why, but it never made sense to him. He was just a merchants son... Perhaps they wanted to build rather than wage war?

In the end, he was just glad he had good counselors by his side. And if war was to come, he would be wise to find a damn good general, for the only wars he truely knew were pillow wars. "Ah, those were the golden days ba..." *creak* the door opens.

Awpathos poked his head over the door:
- "Your majesty, may I come in?"
- "Yes, come in, and please, be excused of all the majesty and titles when not in the presence of the council, that bothers me slightly." - said Bazil, sitting in the nearest chair.
- "Why is that? I mean, it's a great honor to lead the people of Delphi, don't you agree?"
- "Yes, it truely is, but it has not been something I was ready for, nor do I feel I'm the most suitable man to do so"
- "Many leaders before were not either, and they still fared well. Worry not, the council must surely have had its reasons".
- "Yes, and I still can't figure them out." - Bazil turned his eyes to the window once more.

At this point, Melda the wise entered the door, swifter than Bazil expected for his age, and spoke clearly:
"do not question their motives, as even I don't dare to do so. Even if I did, I would probably fail"

Bazil did not question those words. If someone with Melda's knowledge didn't know, how could he know? There wasn't much left to do, but to move on:
"Well then, we have some work to do."

Turn 1 - Game Turn 101 // 350 BC

> Dostana's people have been eating and spending their nights in the warmth of each other, so it wasn't surprising to see it grow. I wish I could have been doing the same, but more pressing matters were at hand. (I knew a part of me was going to regret accepting doing this... :wallbash:) The new citizen was placed on fish, as we want Dostana to increase it's size, and there is no better option.

> Judging our current trade situation, we can trade cotton with the Shoshone, so I decide to assign the east worker to build a cotton plantation. Awpathos humbly disagrees, but accepts my decision. I will later regret not listening to him :crazyeye:.

Turn 2 - Game Turn 102 // 325 BC

> Zurich's leaders seem bored with us, and we lose their friendship. In their words, "you are not amusing us anymore, please take your leave"... That was rude, but no matter. That means -2 happiness, which leaves the people hanging with +2 happiness, whatever that means. General happiness could use some work, but I hope our trades can compensate that sooner rather than later.

Siam seems rather interested in them. However, we shall show them the power of our faith!

> Barracks finished in Khirra. Looking at our territory, I feel that the pressing need is for a worker, we're still getting gold, so the caravan can wait. Some of the traders in Khirra were not happy, but sir Melda ensures me they will forget this in no time. At his point, a letter was delivered with the plans for a giant statue (Colossus was the name) that could improve value our coast. This requires some consideration for a later time.

> A spy comes in that night, and informs me that Casimir III's (Poland) latest discoveries sent him to what our scientist call "medieval era". I need to speak to them, as these names make no sense to me.

Turn 3 - Game Turn 103 // 300 BC

> Dostana's warf produces a fishing boat, so I order them to continue with the boat building, and send the new acquisition into the fish-rich waters east of the city. The new boat will henceforth be known as "Dostana's Hope".

Turn 4 - Game Turn 104 // 275 BC

> Our Scouts in the Northwest continue evaluating Poland's territory, from their latest reports, they seem to have a rather large empire already, 4 cities have been confirmed, and a 5th is suspected under Lodz. We need to evaluate if Poland poses a threat to us, but I will leave that review to Awpathos in the next meeting. Getting some lessons from him may be my best hope.

> As soon as our newest Cotton goes up, 2 trade offers are made. Poland sends 5 shinny iron rock, which I refuse promplty since we have no need for it right now. Shoshone also send an offer, but they have no more gems for us. I should have listened to Awpathos at that day :(, and I will curse myself for this, we may need to consider aternatives to apease the people. On a positive note, they will provide as much as 7 gold per day, 30 times (7 gpt, 30 days, 210 gold during this time, seems like a good offer to gain their trust).

Turn 5 - Game Turn 105 // 250 BC

> I turn my attention to Stone near Delphi, as we can use the production to build better houses in our cities, and provide better support for our structures. Let us hope we do not need that cattle soon.

> Our swordsman arrived near Khirra but found no siege weapon. Perhaps they saw them approaching? Nonetheless, it makes me happy that there isn't an invasion on the horizon.

But for now, it is best I call a session of the council and evaluate this first term.

=======================
The meeting
=======================

I, Bazil, of my first name, call in the council and the wise counselors to discuss the following points:

1) Khirra: A new worker will be ready for us in 3 days time, should we create the caravan to appease our traders, or should we support Dostana with a new boat? Or perhaps we should look into this "Colossus" project and use our previous knowledge in great project building? ((we have social policies for wonders, and it's 13 turns for the colossus))

2) Delphi: Should we focus the city on war preparations, or another path?

3) Dostana: the slow pace of production worries me, 23 turns for a new boat seems rather large. Should we send the new worker here to improve on this situation? What would benefit us more?

4) Science: Our scientists tell me that researching the proper ways of handling these new iron rocks will be finished in 4 days the latest (Metal casting in 4 turns). They wish to persue this venue and find a way to improve on in, and wish to call it Steel.

5) International Matters: Siam's trade agreement will end soon, can we keep trading copper? Bear in mind that losing the copper will send our population into unhappiness.

6) Any new points can be discussed here.

I hope that we can discuss this until the end of the weekend, if possible. :king:

If you could provide the most recent save the council could give advice in greater detail.

Happiness is a concern. We can only grow as many people as we can keep happy. So yes we should renew the copper for cotton trade with Siam if we can. A more permanent solution would be to acquire more resources ourselves.

There are Truffles and Crabs way out west. It would take a while just to walk there let alone build the settler and of course it may be settled by the time we get there. It is very worth while but very much a long range prospect.

Siam has Copper and Incense which we can take. Rough estimate, we would need 2 siege engines, 4 bows and 4 swordsmen. I estimate we could build that in about 30 turns.

Since we are nearly at our happiness limit we should focus on production tiles rather than food tiles. I would like our workers to build mines. That production will let us build military units as well as happiness buildings. The Stoneworks gives both hint hint, and we could actually buy it right now if we choose to.

So, in short: Workers build mines and we make soldiers.

Since Dostana's production is so low it will not be much help with that but adjusting tiles will speed the work boat and the extra food from that can get us a settler to head west.

((Sorry I'm taking so long to reply. It's 2200 now --- Friday --- and I'll load up the game throughout the day tomorrow --- Saturday my time --- and get back to then. :)))

((No problem Melda, take a rest.

1889 the issue I see with settling west would be the time, and then we'd have to keep everyone happy to grow the city there too. We probably will have to get Siam under our belt sooner rather than later. Also, there are crabs 3 tiles away from Dostana, we can always buy that tile if possible.

Btw, how do you calculate that war requirement? Really curious about it))
