My advice is to pump out settlers & claim as much territory as you can at the beginning. You'll need the territory to keep rivals from growing too strong & to win a point victory at the end. Early settlements are also important to build city improvements & make big cities in the New World before time runs out. There is allot of open territory at the beginning.
The Huron & Mohawk start in a locked war, so if you play one of them, you'll need military units early. Braves aren't very good offensive units so I wait until I can build War Chiefs before I go on the offensive.
As a European civ, I've had better luck making friends with the Natives than being in conflict with them. If you aren't friendly with them, they'll ally with your European rival against you at some point & you'll be at war with almost everybody else at the same time.
The Hurons tend to get squeezed between the other Native civs. The Miqmaqs tend to get beaten up by the Europeans 1st. The Mohawk tend to build lots of offensive units-watch out for them. The Ojibwe & Montongais have lots of room to expand.
