SGOTM8 Maintenance Thread - Hydrophobic Americans.

That requires lazy bastards like me to go through 16 threads and make changes when I've been up all night preparing the saves and I then have a day job to sleep through ;)
Alan - Just remember the old proverb - Nil Carborundum Illegitimatum

Your sterling efforts are greatly appreciated even in these far-flung southern reaches of the empire eh what old chap.

Ah! The old school song :).

No "Illegitimatum" around here, though [EDIT - except me], just 90+ reasonable, intelligent, polite players, all with strong .. and different .. opinions

For the benefit of those still wiping the sleepy dust from your eyes, the saves have been available for about six hours now.

(That's Embarrassing Admission Of The Month)

Sorry guys for wasting your time - I just knew I was doing something dumb. My son has explained to me that a zip file needs unzipping.... and then showed me how to do it.

The good news is the mods work fine

I think I'll crawl into the corner with another glass of red

I think you should be thankful you have such an intelligent son!

I think we have all felt the same way at one time or another around here.

Want to get 200 different, strongly held opinions on any topic (especially Civ gameplay)?

Just ask the 90+ SGOTM players!

Hmm. I just tried uploading my 3000BC save, and I got an error:

gotm_games lookup failed

Using Firefox if it means anything, and I've not had trouble uploading SGOTMs before.

[Edit oops... I think I just worked out what I did wrong... I must stop naming my JPEGs .SAV... ]

That'd do it. Don't try to fool the technology. That's my job ;)

I have a question to the powers that be
Am I permitted to reload from autosave after moving worker north when I thought I was moving scout north? - north is definitely not where I want my worker to go

Your worker heading for the beach for some surfing and sunbathing, eh? ;)
So much for hydrophobic.

Reloading to change decisions or outcomes is not permitted in GOTM/SGOTM.

I recommend playing with care, particularly during the early turns when each unit's actions have a large effect.

No SGOTM would be complete without at least one screw-up :( This one's down to me.

The Bug

Those who played SGOTM7 may recall that the C3C Differential Naval Movement implementation was faulty. Ships still had the strange C3C default of ignoring movement cost on Sea tiles, so they treated sea as ocean, and were able to surf around the offshore waters at speed. Well, guess who forgot to get this fixed before SGOTM8

The Impact

"Why would Hydrophobic Americans with no boats care?", I hear someone ask. Well the AI will probably have a point of view about your plans for world conquest, and their fast-moving ships could be a source of later-game problems for you.

The Cure

I therefore propose to edit the C3C team saves to correct this potential problem and restore the Sea movement cost to 2 instead of 1. To do this I need you to pause your play after you upload your next file, and PM to let me know it is available for editing. I'll endeavour to fix it, and let you know, within 24 hours so that you can continue your game. If your current save on the server has not been downloaded and played then let me know and I can, of course, fix it immediately.

I'll also post this in each team thread to ensure maximum visibility.

I apologise for this oversight and any resulting inconvenience.

Your dedication far outweighs the "inconvenience", Alan.

NOTE TO ALL TEAMS: Please try to remember to upload a save at 1000 BC, i.e. turn 80. Most of you will probably do so anyway, but some teams don't always work to ten-turn sets.

When every active team has reached 1000 BC I shall publish the QSC statistics for all the saves that are submitted for that date. This will be an opportunity for you to compare your early-game progress with your competitors.

Several team players seem to be wondering about the lengths of turn sets.

It's entirely up to the teams to agree this, and the submission system will accept any save file, at any date. As guidance, however, the typical Succession Game uses 20 turns for the first set, then 10 turns per set. When you reach the later stages of the game, when turns get longer, you may choose to reduce this or give your players more flexible guidance about how long they play before handing off.

For reference, if you use the above guidline, the turnsets will end at:

4000 BC (turn 0, start)
3000 BC (turn 20)
2550 BC (turn 30)
2150 BC (turn 40)
1750 BC (turn 50)
1500 BC (turn 60)
1250 BC (turn 70)
1000 BC (turn 80)
750 BC (turn 90)
... then 5 turn sets of 200 years until 250 AD (turn 140)
... then 5 turn sets of 100 years until 1250 AD (turn 240)
... then 10 turn sets of 50 years until 1750 AD (turn 340)
... then 10 turn sets of 20 years until 1950 AD (turn 440) -
... then 10 turn sets of 10 years until 2050 AD (turn 540, and the bitter end)

I happened to spot that we have two SGOTM 8 birthdays today ...
