is there a limit on the number of colonies i can build ? thanks

Colonies? Or Cities?

If it's colonies you're inquiring about, I'm unaware of any limit. If it's cities you actually have in mind, it's hard coded at a limit of 512 (IIRC).

There is no limit on colonies that I know of, but some terrains will not allow you to build cities.

I would assume that the only limit is "number of available strategic- + luxury-resource tiles on the map"
