Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I am playing a game with Gandhi (Settler, Continents, regular settings). I just got a message that there has been an Indian revolt in Sparta. Here is the picture. Should I send a bunch of Axemen to conquer Sparta?

The Greek city of Sparta is under cultural pressure from your civ. Do nothing and eventually Sparta will leave Greece and ask to join your nation. You will have two options. Except the offer and you get a free city without violence. Reject the offer and Sparta will be self razed, and disappear.

Here's a silly one I'd appreciate an answer to:

In an unrestricted leaders game, is there a way to see which leader is matched to which civilisation? Is there any screen in the game that shows both leader and nation next to each other? Either with vanilla UI or BUG?

If I go into F4, I see leader names (i.e. Montezuma) but not which civ they lead. If I go into, say, F9, I see civ names but not leaders. Now I know I have war with Genghis Khan, which I only got into because my religion-based ally asked me to and I'd rather keep my immediate neighbour happy so I can expand in the other direction. Now I've explored a bit in the other direction and found a scrap of Inca land. Am I at war with the Inca? How the hell do I tell?

At least in BUG-options you can adjust how the scoreboard is displayed, one option is to have it display both leader name and civ.

Thanks for the reply civfanchambers.

Another question in another game. Gandhi2 of India (Vanilla Civ4, Settler, Continents, etc.). No winning strategy - just messing around. In this game Delhi is the Hindu Holy City, Bombay is the Jewish Holy City and Madras is both the Christian Holy City and the Confucian Holy City.

Instead of typing out all the details I'll include an image of the City screens. I just can't figure out the math here for Culture. Delhi makes sense. Bombay shows +29 culture from Buildings??? Madras only shows +1 Religion.

Do we only get the +5 Culture points for one Holy City?

If you have a state religion you only get culture from that religion, both the +5 for Holy City and the +1 for having the religion.

Anything you can do to increase the culture output in Bangalore will hastens Sparta's defection too you.
Run artist specialists, Build a theater (or temple/monastery) or even set some culture in the sliders if your situation allows.

looks like Sparta would be a good addition to your empire.
Two more gold mines :D ! and if there is some food just off-screen to Bangalore's west it can share the Fish for some rapid growth untill you pop Sparta's boarders and claim that cow.
Not badly sited for an AI city.

I have a weird problem in my game. One of my cities is stuck at 8 citizens. The Food Bar is at 36/36 and there is +2 Food Surplus. Is this a known issue? How do I fix it?

You can compare with my previous post. The same city window around 600AD.

Hard to tell because you've done us the service of cutting the bottom off your screenshots

You probably toggled "avoid growth."

Thanks Tristan! I would have never figured that out. I learned something new.

I would have never thought that the 'Avoid Growth' button would STOP growth when there is surplus food and a full Food Bar. :aargh:

That is exactly what it is intended to do. :p

Does Taj Mahal affect the Great Person requirements for the next Golden Age?

Suppose I trigger Golden Ages like this:
1st - 1 GP
2nd - 2 GP
3rd - Taj Mahal
4th - 3 or 4 GP?

No, Taj Mahal Golden Age is irrelevant for how many great people you need for your next one.

AND keep in mind, if you build taj during a GA you'll get an extra turn of GA.

I know that when a Worker builds a Fort on a Forest tile the Forest is destroyed and we lose the +50% defense bonus. Will a Fort destroy a Hill too? Do we lose the +25% defense bonus from the Hill?

No, the hill remains and you get an extra 25% defense bonus on top of the fort bonus.

Forts don't remove forests.

Oh I thought they did, pob. Might be wrong.

I think I read somewhere that the Fort will only give +25% bonus defense and not the combined defense of the forest (+50%) and the Fort (+25%).

So will I get the bonus defense of +75% for building a Fort on a Forest? +100% defense bonus for a Fort on a Hill/Forest??

Ah I remember my question now. Can I trade without Open Borders if I have a road or river or coastal connection?

You get the combined defence bonus. You also get any city relevant promotion bonuses (i.e. city garrison on the defence, and city raider if attacking a fort tile).

As long as you have a connection you can trade resources, you don't need open borders.
