Pakistan has successfully test-fired its first cruise missile. The successful missile test was given as a birthday present for Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf. The missile is capable of reaching 500km (310 miles) and flies low enough to avoid a nations defensive radar systems. Pakistan had signed a deal with which to inform nuclear rival, India, of future ballistic missile tests. India was not informed of this test because it is a guided missile, not a ballistic missile. India had no comment on the test.

Pakistan Test-Fires Cruise Missile, Igniting Fears Of New Arms Race
By Robert Parsons, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
Pakistan says it has test-fired its first cruise missile capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons. Cruise missiles fly close to the ground and are able to slip beneath most antimissile systems. There are fears that the test could undermine Pakistan's relations with India, which have been on an upturn in recent months. Pakistan gave no advance warning of the launch, despite agreeing with India just a few days ago to give advance warning of future ballistic-missile tests.
