Be honest, you know you've always wanted to let those Berserks out of the bag in a C/GOTM game, and if you didn't play GOTM22 you've been out of luck. Well, here's your chance!

Civilization: Scandinavia (Seafaring, Militaristic)
Difficulty: Monarch.
World Size: Standard size, atypical configuration. 80% Ocean, 3 Billion Years.
Climate: Temperate, normal.
Rivals: 7 pre-selected.
Barbarians: Roaming.

Conquest Class Benefits:
  1. Extra starting worker.
  2. Starting curragh.
  3. Starting warrior.
  4. 100 gold (for unit support).

Predator Class Equalisers:
  1. Attack strength of barbarian warriors and galleys increased to 2.
  2. AI Unit support increased to emperor level.

Be smart, and plan well, because this might be a little bit more difficult than your average Monarch game. You'll need skillful diplomacy and strong civic development to go along with the fury of the Berserks, if you wish to succeed on Renata's map.

Note: Do not post in this thread once you have opened the start file of your choice.

Atypical configurations means a landform which cannot be described as continent, pangea and archipelago?

Wha the hell???? I'm the first to post?!?!?! I can't believe it.

What do you maen A-typical map

Edit: Damn you Redbad. I guess the Bezerker already beat me.

lemme see the Berserker is a replacement for the Longbowman right? Can build with no resourses and start at invention. should be a 6/2/1 unit that can attack from a ship. Cool... Vikings are Mil and Exp if memory serves me correctly and start with WC and POTS and a scout.

I was informed by my brother Ragnar, so you really didn't have chance.

That's correct for PTW in C3C they are Mil and Seaf. and start with alpha and WC.

Actualy I thought there was something wrong because I scroled down and there were no other post. I think I stared at my screen for 60 sec before i figured out what was up.

Is this the same atypical type map that we had in GOTM 17 with all the little islands

Great. I'm already pining for the fjords :) . It looks like SoZ is on the cards with that efalump so close.

skillful diplomacy...strong civic development....
80% ocean....atypical...

Wow! This sounds as fun as COTM08 which took me WAY out of my comfort zone. Just hope we're the only civ w/ Ivory! :D

I don't see a reason to move from the start, though I will move my worker 1W first. Don't see any immediate way to irrigate, so I'll probably start with 1-2 warriors to explore. Really want to find a settler factory spot. Obviously archer will be my initial military of choice, so what is the catch? Worker will focus on mining all of the bonus grassland and connecting the ivory. This capital will have an excellent production capability.

That's correct. Any of those descriptions would be misleading, so I punted. :)

Let's see in the starting location, we're on the coast, have 2 BG & Oasis in initial radius and will gain ivory (SOZ) + at least 1 more BG on expansion. I see no reason to move. Those starting techs are Warrior Code (Militaristic) and Alphabet (Seafaring), so I'll probably build a warrior and then a pair of curraghs while researching Writing at minimum going to the Philosophy-Republic gambit (hoping to be able to trade for pottery), then a settler, granary and settlers. The worker will head for the BG and later connect the ivory to help out with happiness.

The abnormal map layout with 80% water, should mean lots of galleys with Berserks kicking butt, but we'll need to get them into action while the AI is still defending with Pikes. I'll probably build lots of vet archers to use as MP and barb hunters as Berserks in training.

(Misfit: You're thinking about the PTW Vikings, these guys get curraghs instead of scouts)

Hi all. First of all let me say I am total newbie, and am just starting to get my head around the complexities of this game! I study SirPlebs posts like gospel :)

But anway, I would be tempted to settle on the hill W, W. This would give a more central position to reduce corruption. You would still get at least 3 BG.

What do you guys think about this?

Renata

Or... atypical can be considered as a landscape with a woman touch :)

Anyway, I am skipping GOTM39 and I  for this one.

FYI - this is the first "guest map", ably put together by Renata. In addition to a new designer providing different ideas and perspective, it means I get to compete in this one as well - I'm looking forward to it! :D

Welcome back to the competition, ainwood

@denyd: don't forget the sizable cost in upgrading from archers to berseks (I'm sure that you haven't)-Leo's will help here but a *very* healthy treasury is a must! However if there are plenty of coastal towns built by other civs, they will be worth every gp spent on them. ;)

@jafa: I personally see no reason to move as we lose two turns and also lose the extra commerce that seafaring civs get with coastal towns. Then again there is probably three cows on the other side of that hill and I'll miss out on them :)

I'm already looking forward to the 'atypical' map-thanks Renata!

@jafa: Agree w/ Tone. Atypical map has me confused. I'd like some form of description (like 1/2 continent, 1/2 islands), but it does make it more interesting. In case we are on a small landmass, being able to put out boats right away with a seafaring civ could be important.

That's right. This is the question to think about. Should we build a warrior or a couragh?

Warrior, then curragh. Those curraghs cook along at speed three, while non-seafaring curraghs only putt-putt along at speed two.

Definintely settle in place and mine the BGL then get the Ivory hooked up.

Warrior, curragh, settler, granary (hoping to trade for Pottery), worker, worker, and then settlers.

Looks like fun. I've always wanted to pillage the lands with the Berserker but haven't had time to yet.

I guess I better finish up my defeat in COTM08 so I can get on with this one.
