Hi, I'm a horrendous newbie.

I've played Civ I/Civ II. I've played Civ III a few times through. We're playing Multiplayer at work. Having discovered GOTM this week, I thought I'd have a play along (and not submit) just as a learning experience. So I'll be reading the spoilers even if I'm not that far yet (don't have much time to play at all so I'll probably take two months to finish. At least. If I even finish. I suck too.)

Anyway, I'm looking at the Conquests 12, and I've read the intro and the pre-req stuff.

My screen says 1.22, not 1.22f. Is there a difference? I thought I'd got the latest patch, but maybe not?

Also, I'm confused by this page:
http://gotm.civfanatics.net/games/gotm_mods.php

Do I need any mods for Conquests? Or is that just for vanilla civ?

Cheers,

Mike

1.22 = 1.22f. I think the f just stands for full patch or something.

And no mods needed for Conquests (just Vanilla) so you are good to go.

Good luck! :)

Hi - welcome to the C/GOTM!

No, you don't need any mods for conquests - you are correct - they are for vanilla civ only. If you want to play the GOTM, you can play with PTW (installs with C3C if you don't have it already), and the PTW version doesn't require modpacks either.

Also, 1.22 = 1.22f, so no problem there either. BTW - there's nothing to lose by submitting either. We give global ranking points where you get more for submitting than for not submitting. :)

Ok thanks for the info, perhaps I'll pick up the current GOTM then. I'll have a look and see which looks less likely to have me dead in 10 turns ;-)

I would submit, but I plan to "cheat" by reading the spoilers before I get there to help me. Because, as I mentioned, I suck. Perhaps I'll (try) and play GOTM and COTM and play one fair and submit. But, like I said, very little time (Full time IT job, spare time IT job, 11 month old daughter, lots of DIY on the to do list...)

Hi! Don't be afraid, you're not alone! I decided to make my first COTM as well... ;) I hope I won't be too bad after all, especially since I'm not that familiar with desert-starting-positions but I'll have a shot at it.

One question: It's fine to use civ-assist v.1.1.2., correct?? I know that it is on the list of acceptible utility programs, but since there had been so many comments in the thread for this tool, I just want to make sure...
Thanx beforehand! ;)

@Stilgar08: CivAssist is fine. It's written in part by ainwood, so he has worked tirelessly to ensure that it's a non-spoiler for GOTM, and only provides information you *could* glean from the in-game screens if you looked hard enough.

To compare your first 80 turns with other players, you can use this link to go to the Quick Start Challenge Results page.

Pointing to the player name allows you to download that players save file at 1000BC and pointing to the score allows you to download that players timeline or QSC Log. I have learned a great deal from these as you can follow turn-by-turn what the player does and how they develop their empire.

Good luck and have fun!!

@Alan&Leif: thank you for these information!
I will definitely check those QSC-timelines out. I already read a few ones by now and they are really helpful! ;) (unfortunately I read only AFTER I started with COTM12 and messed up the first 3000 years  ).
